ReJouligan Zora Chung had a chance to visit the Holman before Emerge 2024 kicked off. The Model T photo opp as well as the fact that Holman is celebrating its centennial this year definitely felt like we’re part of American history. That was topped off by the stellar guests including a former white house chief of staff and design lead for the Tesla Model 3 assembly line. The event itself ranged from topics from AI to energy management. Overall there was a huge focus on innovations that impact automotive with 18 startups (including ReJoule) featured across 3 breakout sessions. Thank you so much to the Holman team for this wonderful opportunity. Happy Centennial and here’s to the next 100 years! #ReJoule #ReJouligans #Sustainability #Innovation #Cleantech #electricvehicles #EVs #repair #refurbishing #remanufacturing #repurposing #batterytech #circulareconomy #HolmanEmerge2024

This week, Laura Levine, PMP from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Christopher J. Perez from U.S. House of Representatives visited our facility! We showed them how our BattScan500V can provide a state-of-health (SOH) battery diagnostic by plugging it into the DC fast charging port. Our test gets real data from the battery itself, and does not rely only on vehicle information. Would you like to see it live, too? If so, request a demo at the following link: https://lnkd.in/g-GhtmuA For more information on BattScan500V, visit our website! https://lnkd.in/gxyfMFsf

ReJoule reposted this
In 2017, siblings Steven and Zora Chung founded ReJoule, a sustainable technology company that helps repair and repurpose electric vehicle batteries. Earlier this year, ReJoule won the 2024 Sustainable Practice Impact Award funded by The Lemelson Foundation at the 2024 VentureWell OPEN Conference. Hans Eric Melin visited ReJoule’s facility! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and insights on the end-of-life battery market and the importance of a circular economy in our industry! #ReJoule #ReJouligans #Sustainability #BeforeRecycling #Innovation #Cleantech #electricvehicles #EVs #secondlifebatteries #reuse #repair #refurbishing #remanufacturing #repurposing #batterytech
Where is the actual business in the end-of-life battery market? 💰 And where are the opportunities going forward? 💰💰💰 After having spent more than 15 years in this industry I think the first question is a real simple one to answer. It's where there are enough volumes of material to process at prices which can generate a healthy gross margin over time. A good start for that is to focus on volumes that in fact do exist and preferably to collect and process batteries at a point where they are unwanted by both owners and competitors. Experience, good management, permits and incremental improvements build barriers to entry. The market will always be there although the question is how much it will grow. Where new opportunies are found is much more fluid and depends as much on where EVs will be made in the future as what actually happens with the batteries when they are in use. So far most of the investments in end-of-life treatment has gone into recycling with the anticipation that large amounts of EVs on the market equal large amounts of batteries to be recycled. The questions are of course when and where these opportunities will materialise. Not least when the events preceeding waste processing can take batteries in many directions. That's why I am very passionate about all solutions that can help to determine this flow and not least maximise the value of the batteries over their lifetime. One company that is doing a great job here is the Southern California startup ReJoule with its founders Steven Chung and Zora Chung developing devices for rapid evaluation of state of health of batteries, both when they remain in the vehicles and when they are removed to be evaluated for repurposing. Below a short clip from our conversation in their lab three weeks ago. Not least Rejoule's work is critical to make pricing of batteries more efficent. Because prices is the start of everything. At Circular Energy Storage Research and Consulting we are focusing on exactly this: to deliver what we find are the critical data to understand where the opportunies are: prices of batteries in their different stages of life, volumes of batteries and players in the market. Exciting News! 🎉 We couldn’t be happier to announce that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) named ReJoule a semi-finalist in their Re-X Before Recycling competition! This contest aims to develop innovative methods to extend the lifetimes of products through reuse, repair, refurbishing, remanufacturing, or repurposing (what the DOE calls “Re-X”) before recycling. Our entry? The world’s first technology that can assess the state of health of an electric vehicle battery without the need to remove it from the car. Connect our suitcase-sized device through the charging port, and presto! We hope to make electric vehicle batteries go further – on the road, for as long as possible – and then in the afterlife, when they can be repurposed or recycled. The prize? $50,000 in cash and $5,000 in support from a national laboratory. To learn more you can find more information about the contest in the following link! https://lnkd.in/epgbaVgW #ReJoule #ReJouligans #Sustainability #BeforeRecycling #Innovation #Cleantech #electricvehicles #EVs #secondlifebatteries #reuse #repair #refurbishing #remanufacturing #repurposing #batterytech

ReJouligan Hugo Leduc presented his newest paper - Rapid Diagnostics To Enable EV Battery Reuse - last month at the 2024 REMADE Circular Economy Technology Summit & Conference! Thanks REMADE Institute for hosting such an insightful conference! A circular economy is crucial to fighting climate change. When batteries are immediately sent for recycling, their full potential is not being employed. By testing a battery, you are able to identify where the battery is in the material user hierarchy, which enables an affordable, insurable, and repairable used BEV market. If you are interested in reading the paper, please reach out! #ReJoule #ReJouligans #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #batterytech #Innovation #Cleantech #electricvehicles #evs #secondlifebatteries

Thanks Di Wu for organizing a great panel on Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) at the IEEE PES T&D Conference & Exposition! It was so great for ReJoule's CEO Steven Chung to take the stage with Jeremy Twitchell, Dhruv Bhatnagar, and Russ Weed to talk about why LDES is so important for a decarbonized grid. Key Takeaways: • We need more investment in LDES today, so that they can be ready for prime time in a few years. LDES technologies will take time to mature. These include furthering technical readiness, supply chains, business models, financing structures, and insurance. Investing today at a smaller scale will ensure that 10+ hour storage will be available to meet aggressive decarbonization targets beyond 2030. • Policy needs to signal and incentivize longer duration storage so developers and builders can plan for it and get paid for it. The average duration storage in California is <4 hours, and the the average duration storage in Texas is just over 1 hour. Developers won't invest in or maintain an extra 10 hours of duration if they can't get return on their investment. • We need to re-examine how we define and quantify resiliency. The cost of a website outage to Amazon and Meta is well documented down to the minute. The same kind of rigor needs to be applied to the resilience of the electrical grid, particularly for disadvantaged communities that need reliable and clean power the most. Repurposed batteries can be an important part of the solution, but we first need to solve supply chain challenges and de-risk the business model. ReJoule is demonstrating this at our first second-life battery deployment at the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Southern California this year. Soon, we'll continue our important work around the country with support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of their Long Duration Energy Storage initiative! #ReJoule #ReJouligans #EnergyStorage #Sustainability #Innovation #Cleantech #ElectricVehicles #EVs #Secondlifebatteries #BatteryTech
