With exponentially rising energy demands in Missouri, more discourse appears in the state capital about what forms of energy should be added to the grid to compensate. This rule, which had broad support, "resulted from a nearly three-year-long working group docket, which included two workshops, a voluntary case study, active participation from over fourteen stakeholders, and multiple rule revisions." St. Louis is using trees to combat heat in asphalt-heavy urban areas.🌳🌿🪴🌱 The Post Dispatch covers the work being done with the $8 million grant from the Inflation Reduction Act. The article states that "St. Louis' grant focuses on how trees can help take the edge off extreme heat, particularly in urban areas where paved surfaces can drastically exacerbate hot conditions- a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect because temperature in a city can far exceed those in surrounding countryside." A new report from Energy Innovation finds that clean energy is not driving the increase in electric rates! The articles states, "In fact, some of the smallest electric rate increases have been in states with high rates of wind and solar generation, such as Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico." "Since 2010, average residential electric rates and the U.S. Consumer Price Index both have increased about 40%, the report notes, but average bills have increased only 24%, because of reduced household energy use. Energy-efficiency measures and rising use of distributed resources such as rooftop solar are credited for this."
