It is where we laughed, cried, and yelled - but most importantly, where we bonded and connected.” - Michael Symon (American chef) When choosing furniture items for the families we serve, it is not a matter of just checking off boxes and giving them whatever we have in the workshop. We want our beneficiaries to be proud of the furniture in their homes, for the items to pair well together and complement each other. Since we receive many items not in sets but individually, it is up to our team and volunteers to refinish them in a way that brings them together. This solid wood table came to us worn, scratched, and without matching chairs. We had multiple chairs with similarly turned wood legs, making them a possible match. After sanding down the tabletop and applying stain and sealant to highlight the natural beauty of the wood, the base, legs, and chairs were all painted black to bring the set together. (we opted not to include the weird, unnecessary 5th leg that the table came with 😆) This set was recently delivered to a refugee family of four from Afghanistan through our amazing partners at the Diocese of Olympia Refugee Resettlement Office, along with a couch, lighting, and other furniture pieces. We hope these items provide them comfort and a place to gather as a family in their new home. May was another busy month at the Repair Bank! We had the pleasure of hosting team events with motivated and hardworking volunteers from Amazon, Microsoft, REI, Precisely, Discovery Education (DreamBox Learning), Salesforce, Expedia Group, Guy Carpenter and Starbucks. On May 18th we joined many other organizations across the city in hosting volunteers for the One Seattle Day of Service promoted by the City of Seattle. With two shifts totaling over 60 people, quite a lot was accomplished that day, including loading the truck for deliveries to families on the 19th! 30 new individuals signed up to join the ranks of our mighty volunteers in the coming weeks and we are eager to teach them restoration skills, or help them hone existing skills! April was a whirlwind of an Earth Month at the Repair Bank! 🌎 💚 In addition to nine open Repair Days, we also hosted eleven group events including teams from the Seattle offices of Starbucks, Nestlé, REI, Pariveda, Amazon, UPS, Bee Organized Seattle, and the Evans School of Public Policy & Governance, University of Washington! The teams all had a great time and so much was accomplished in our short time together. On the 20th we hosted our first ever Open House to share our mission with friends, partners, furniture donors, and sustainability-minded supporters. Earth Day itself saw us back at the warehouse refinishing furniture destined for the landfill with our mighty and dedicated volunteers! One day later we were able to share our program and mission with the employees and partners of Expedia Group and Starbucks at the Sustainability Fairs hosted at their offices. With the amazing increase in group events in recent months, our output has increased significantly. Last month our delivery day served eight different families in the greater Seattle area! We hope to soon be able to deliver to households more than once a month, which will be easier once we can get our own dedicated transportation. Once the furniture is completed, we need to get it out the door to the people who need it, and to make room for more!
