Thank you Max Sano for supporting the #RYNFellowship capstone projects ✍👨🎓! Over the next month, Fellows will work on individual writing pieces that combine their learnings about natural hazard resilience from the program with their personal experiences and future ideas to improve resilience capacity in Nepal. These capstone pieces will be published on The Greenzine and RYN websites. Sending cares to those of our Fellows currently experiencing major transportation and power outage impacts due to recent rainfall, landslides, and riverine flooding in Nepal. An important reminder of why #climateresilience is the ultimate sustainability! Resilience Action Fund

Last month, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its 2024-2027 Climate Adaptation Plan, which aims to integrate climate adaptation into various aspects of its operations, focusing on partnerships and environmental justice. Key highlights include: - Developing Climate-Resilient #SupplyChains: The EPA incorporates climate hazard risk assessments into its Supply Chain Risk Management plan. By conducting thorough risk assessments under relevant federal acts, the agency aims to make its procurement processes resilient to climate-related disruptions, setting a standard for supply chain management. - Building Facility #Resilience: The EPA is conducting assessments to identify vulnerabilities in its facilities to climate change impacts. These evaluations focus on structural and operational weaknesses that may be affected by extreme weather, rising temperatures, and flooding. - Integrating Climate Adaptation into #Rulemaking Processes: To maintain the effectiveness of regulations under changing climate conditions, the EPA is integrating climate adaptation considerations into its rulemaking processes. New rules, for example, require facilities managing hazardous materials to prepare for extreme weather scenarios, ensuring that regulations remain robust and adaptive in the face of climate change. As mentioned previously in my posts, the federal government has set ambitious goals for net-zero emissions in federal buildings by 2045, supported by the EPA's Climate Adaptation Plan, President Biden's Executive Order 14057, and the Federal Sustainability Plan. Notable aspects of the plan include: Building for #NetZero Emission: By 2030, all new construction and major renovation projects over 25,000 square feet will be designed to reach net-zero emissions. This includes: - Prioritizing building electrification and replacing fossil-fuel equipment with carbon-free technologies. - Generating and storing clean energy on-site. - Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from operations. - Utilizing data analytics for efficient system management. Sustainable and #Equitable Siting: The Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) (The White House) will issue guidance to ensure federal facilities enhance community vitality and livability. This involves: - Strategically placing federal workplaces to use local infrastructure efficiently. - Expanding access to public transportation. - Aligning federal real estate investments with local and regional planning and sustainability goals. Net-Zero Emissions Buildings Federal Leaders Working Group: This group has been established to drive strategy and implementation, providing reports to the National Climate Task Force every six months. For more details, you can explore the full EPA 2024-2027 Climate Adaptation Plan or the Net-Zero Emissions Buildings Plan at the links in my comment section. #EPA

In today's 4th #RYNFellowship session we learned about building resilience through policy and finance from Sarang Mani of the RYN Board and had a group discussion of last week's homework assignment designed by Kira Clingen: Observe: Take or find five photos of a place that you are familiar with (your street or city).  Orient: Write a brief sentence or two for each photograph describing the climate hazards in each photo.  Decide: Write a brief sentence or two describing possible solutions to those hazards. Fellows, you are doing so awesome! We look forward to seeing you at next week's session on journalism and advocacy led by the amazing Max Sano of the The Greenzine!!!

Had our 3rd session of the #RYNFellowship today! We focused on design for landslides, floods, and other climate hazards in Nepal led by Board Member Kira Clingen from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and Dane Carlson of Principia College. Thank you especially to Dane for sharing your community adaptation work in Nepal and for instigating a provocative and engaging discussion with our Fellows and Deepak Marahatta.

Awesome 2nd session of our #Summer2024 Nepal Fellowship 🇳🇵🌏👨🎓! Many thanks to our expert guest, Jiwnath Ghimire of Iowa State University, for his presentation on disasters, social vulnerabilities, and recovery planning in Nepal 🌊🔥. Thank you also to Laxman Kafle of MIT Civil and Environmental Engineering for sharing his research on big reservoirs, landslides, and their cascading effects, and to RYN's Deepak Marahatta for leading the session💡. For next week, Fellows will examine real examples of #DiasterRiskReduction and share their findings on strategies for mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery in groups. #Resilience #ClimateResilience #RYNFellowship

Great to share the knowledge with sustainability professionals that a building being Green (G) does not necessarily equate to it being Resilient (R). To be Sustainable (S) you need both: S = G + R Thank you Botswana Green Building Council and Tebogo 'Tebby' Modisagape

What an experience we had yesterday. I wish it was a physical training with a site visit to the iconic Botswana Digital & Innovation Hub to further appreciate the resilience of the iconic building. I learned something new yesterday, thanks to our speaker and presenter Aris Papadopoulos chair of Resilience Action Fund a Distinguished Expert in Resilience. I discovered that two identical buildings can both be green, but their different locations do not guarantee they will both be resilient. It is exciting to know that the iconic BDIH was manually rated a B using the Building Resilience Index (BRI) during the presentation. After Paul Norton shared additional information on the building’s performance, the resilience rating could potentially elevate to an A+. This initiative highlights our dedication to developing structures that are both sustainable and resilient against climate challenges. Congratulations to the project team of BDIH! Although the building is not fully complete, it is resilient! Stay tuned as we work towards a more resilient and sustainable future! The next training we want the participantion of the insurance companies and commercial banks.
