RethinkAction

In the Southern Great Plain (#Alföld, #Hungary), key risks identified include declining precipitation and increased heat, posing significant challenges to agricultural productivity and water availability. This map shows the anomalies of the precipitation in percentage, calculated for the 30-year average short-term (2015-2040), mid-century (2041-2070) and end-century (2071-2100) future projected periods compared with the historical period (1985-2014). The map shows a general tendency of decreased precipitation over the region. According to the CMIP6 data for SSP5-8.5 scenario, the Southern Great Plain could experience a decline of the precipitation from 2.8% to 8.4%. The most affected region would be the southwest quarter of the area. The decreasing precipitation trend in the summer months and its concentrated nature, and the increase of temperature (average and the number of days with extreme heat) can cause increasing water stress in the case study region during the summer term. The scarcity concerns all the water bodies and reserves below and above ground level, due to their connectedness at watershed level. The above displayed climate data for the Southern Great Plain region have a resolution of 5.5 km by 5.5 km and were created by CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici for RethinkAction. The datasets are included in the #Zenodo RethinkAction repository (https://buff.ly/3yEKWlL) This map and the other 9 were created by GMV for #RethinkAction using the anomalies of three basic Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) generated by CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (daily maximum near surface air temperature, precipitation and near surface wind speed) to support the visualization and analysis of the climate risks for the Southern Great Plain. 🌟 Conference Update! 🌟 We are happy to share the success of our recent participation at the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) Symposium (#IGARSS2024) held in Athens, Greece. With over 3,000 attendees, this prestigious event provided a fantastic platform to showcase our work from the #RethinkAction project. On 18 June 2024, the #RethinkAction project was featured at the Global Research & Innovation Symposium on the opening day of the ICLEI World Congress 2024. The event was co-designed in partnership with Mission Innovation Net-Zero Compatible Innovations Initiative, UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub, Open Earth Foundation, and Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), and was delivered as a complementary event to the Innovate4Cities 2024 Conference taking place in September 2024 in Montreal, Canada. The Symposium was co-organized by the São Paulo School of Management of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV EAESP) and the University of São Paulo (USP).  With over 300 registrations, participants included global representatives from cities, practice, academia, business and international organizations. The Symposium aimed to foster exchange of knowledge and practices in Research and Innovation through panel discussions and collaboration via a "Global Marketplace" that gave selected pitchmakers the chance to present and further refine their projects with the audience and a panel of experts. The RethinkAction project was selected to be showcased at the “Knowledge Hall” with other impactful projects. Participants had the opportunity to find out more about the project, join the End-User Community and express interest in becoming early replicators and applying the RethinkAction platform in their own contexts. At the #EURESFO24, we had the unique opportunity to present #RethinkAction to an expert audience and spread the word about the importance of transforming #LandUse in Europe and beyond, and the innovative platform that our consortium are currently developing. Furthermore, in a panel discussion, #RethinkAction was showcased as an example of #multistakeholder participation in the creation of actionable digital solutions. As #RethinkAction slowly enters the final stage of the project cycle and in great anticipation for the final result, there couldn't have been a better timing for this. Digital tools can be extremely helpful in tackling the climate crisis at many levels of urban actions. However, it is important to be aware of when they are inclusive and when they can have the opposite effect on the most vulnerable communities.
