RethinkWaste knows all about battery fires. A lithium-ion battery caused over $8.5 million in damages to our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in September 2016. Thankfully no one was injured. On behalf of RethinkWaste, Recology will be performing contamination monitoring “Route Reviews” of residential and commercial garbage, recycling, and compost cart/bin contents over the next several weeks. These annual reviews are required by the State of California and SB 1383 to assess contamination levels of each waste stream. This is an effort to help identify which items are commonly being placed in the wrong bins by mistake and will guide RethinkWaste's education and outreach. Educational cart tags may be left.
