We're excited to announce our invited speakers for Tuesday, September 10th at the 2024 #AIHealthConference: Andrea Ramirez, MD, MS and Gil Alterovitz, PhD. Andrea R. is the Chief Data Officer for The National Institutes of Health's "All of Us" Research Program. Before joining NIH, Andrea was a physician scientist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Andrea will unpack her team's mission at NIH to accelerate health research and medical breakthroughs during her session, "The All of Us Research Program: A Platform to Transform Biomedical Research." Gil Alterovitz, PhD, FACMI, FAMIA will follow with a talk on "AI Research and Development at VA," addressing his work as Director of National Artificial Intelligence with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Throughout his career, Dr. Alterovitz has worked on national and international collaborative initiatives for developing and applying AI approaches from research to point-of-care. Rice CS PhD student Ruozhen (Catherine) HE presented her paper, Improved Visual Grounding through Self-Consistent Explanations, at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 2024 conference this summer in Seattle. The paper outlines a method for improving the ability of vision-and-language models (VLMs) to localize objects described by text within images. The process, known as “visual grounding,” is key to helping machine learning models understand the world. Catherine He was advised on this paper by Associate Professor of Computer Science Vicente Ordónez-Román. Recently graduated PhD students Paola Cascante-Bonilla and Ziyan Yang also contributed to this research, with collaboration from UC Irvine professor Alexander Berg. https://bit.ly/4dfe9CS

A research group led by Rice CS' Vicky Y. has been awarded a Data Insights award from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to characterize single-cell RNA-sequencing tools and track trends of their use across biomedical literature.
