Keeping Families Close
About us
Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southern California (RMHCSC) is committed to providing comfort, care and support to children and families in Southern California through a variety of wellness and educational programs. Across the Southland, RMHCSC is working to create a community where children and families embrace life and healing with a sense of hope, enthusiasm, courage and joy. RMHCSC currently operates eight Ronald McDonald Houses® in Bakersfield, Loma Linda, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Orange and Pasadena. Ronald McDonald Houses located throughout Southern California help families stay close to their child when they need treatment for a serious medical condition. Our Houses provide a home-like setting, close to the region's top hospitals, where families can stay free-of charge for as long as necessary. We also operate Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at CHOC Children's Hospital in Orange and CHOC Children's at Mission Hospital. We are one of very few Ronald McDonald House Charities chapters across the world that operates a cost-free, medically-supervised Camp for children with cancer and their families, Camp Ronald McDonald For Good Times®. We support the children of our Southland communities by awarding scholarships to high–achieving high school seniors and providing grants to non–profit organizations working to improve the lives of children.

It's been two decades since I last immersed myself in a camp setting, working one-on-one with youth. The energy, connection, and transformative power of those experiences have stayed with me, fueling my passion and inspiring my career. Ever since I joined Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times nearly twelve years ago, I felt a pull—a deep yearning to work one on one with youth again. I heeded the call this summer and spent last week at Camp. The application process reaffirmed my commitment to the program and the children we serve. Once "hired," I eagerly signed up for session one, submitted my PTO, and prepared for a transformative experience. Despite my familiarity with Camp, immersing myself as a counselor was wildly different. It was like listening to the entirety of your favorite album rather than just the top hits. The week began with two days of rigorous yet exciting training with over 40 fellow counselors. Radical love and acceptance were our guiding principles. I was thrilled to be placed in Dance and Improv. Partnered with Songbird, a former camper turned first-time counselor, we choreographed a dance for Beyoncé’s "Texas Hold ‘Em," a performance for the entire camp community. When the campers arrived, I unplugged from the outside world, ready to engulf myself fully in the camp's loving, unplugged community. The first camper I met was Alegría, whose fear was palpable. We guided her and others, doing our best to make them feel at home. The week flew by in a blur of joyful activity. From spirited dance and improv sessions to heartwarming moments shared under the stars with CABIN 3 boys, each day was filled with love, laughter, and learning. The dance night was a highlight. Watching campers and counselors move with fearless abandon filled me with a sense of accomplishment and profound joy. As I reflect on this week, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. The purpose of Camp, to create a community of love and support, was lived out in every moment. I witnessed the best of humanity in our campers, staff, and counselors, a testament to the power of radical love. In sharing these experiences with my husband, Lucio, he likened it to the work of Fr. Greg Boyle and Homeboy Industries, creating loving communities of kinship to counteract division and isolation. That is the spirit of Camp—a place where love overflows, healing not only the children but all of us who are part of this beautiful community. Camp Director Chad's closing reflection reminded us to take the spirit of camp down the mountain, to make the world a better place. As I return to my role at RMHCSC, I carry this call with me, committed to spreading the love and kinship I experienced. To the campers, counselors, and staff of Session 1, thank you for a week that will live in my heart forever. You are the change we seek in this world. #RadicalLove #CampRonaldMcDonaldForGoodTimes #YouthEmpowerment #CancerSupport #VolunteerJourney #TransformativeExperience #CommunityOfLove #RMHCSC

We also want to extend a big thank you to our Chapter Board Member Vince Torres for building a nationwide partnership between Ronald McDonald House Charities and DIRECTV.
