It’s an incredible feeling when you have team alignment. Finance teams have often been seen as the "gatekeepers". Not because they want to be, but because of the tools they’ve had at their disposal. Even today, they carry the crucial responsibilities of managing financial data, ensuring compliance, and protecting the organization’s financial health. However, the lack of collaborative tools has traditionally forced finance into a gatekeeping role, controlling access to critical financial information. But the landscape is quickly evolving. We're starting to see more and more finance teams moving beyond the gatekeeping role to become enablers of innovation and collaboration across their organizations. Runway is helping drive this shift, empowering everyone—regardless of their financial expertise—to meaningfully engage with and understand their business. One of my favorite examples is Andrew Maher at Superhuman, who uses Runway to democratize finance and drive ownership among his cross-functional leaders. By providing real-time insights and accessible financial data, Andrew empowers each leader to take control of their respective business areas, leading to a more aligned, efficient, and proactive team.

Didn't think I would be part of another unboxing video after leaving e-commerce. Especially for a SaaS product like Runway! But here we are with our very first one, featuring Paul Barnhurst aka The FP&A Guy, and our exclusive launch jackets. 🧥 At Shopify, unboxing videos were a big part of how we connected with our community, whether through Milestones or Shopify Supply. These videos turned opening a product into an experience, building excitement and giving people a tangible sense of achievement. It was all about celebrating those first impressions and creating something memorable and fun. Had a blast putting these together, and it was amazing to see how our Runway community connected with this one!

Spreadsheets have been the backbone of business operations for decades, evolving from simple calculation tools into complex systems that drive decision-making across organizations. But as powerful as they are, spreadsheets also come with limitations—disconnected data, version control issues, and a steep learning curve for those not fluent in formulas. It’s time to move beyond the spreadsheet and towards a future where insights are accessible to all and collaboration is seamless. Join our webinar next week, where our very own Siqi Chen will be joined by special guest Paul Barnhurst, aka The FP&A Guy. They’ll explore the history of finance tools and how they’ve shaped today’s business operations. Plus, we’ll discuss why we built Runway—to meet the need for a more intuitive and connected platform that empowers everyone. Link the comments below! 👇

Finance teams at cloud companies have had it relatively easy for a long time But that’s changing… Several things will make it harder: -ARR less recurring -pricing model changes -AI stuff -Potential recession -tough fundraising environment -More customer invoice writeoffs -etc And a Q&A on forecasting with Siqi Chen https://lnkd.in/gARtaQPS

What most people don't realize is that a financial model isn’t the only model driving your business. Your talent team has a headcount model. Your product team has a pricing model. Your revenue team has a forecasting model. Each of these models captures crucial information about how your business operates. But here’s the problem: they’re all in disparate spreadsheets, disconnected from one another, and often only understood by the few people who built them. What excites me most is seeing customers without a finance background, like Freddie Hammond actively building in Runway. Freddie not only embraces the platform but also understands the vision we’re heading towards—to make business understandable and accessible to everyone.

What do a spreadsheet, a piece of chalk, and a clay token have in common? Throughout history, they’ve all been used as financial tools. Join our first-ever webinar, with Paul Barnhurst, The FPandA Guy, to find out more. It’s on Thursday, August 22nd at 10am PT. Here's the link to register: https://lnkd.in/gZ9qB4Q6
Spreadsheets didn’t exist 40 years ago. It’s hard to imagine a world without them, but the idea for one only came to Dan Bricklin at Harvard in 1978. The story goes like this: Bricklin watched his professor write formulas and data into a grid on the blackboard. Every time the model had to be updated, the professor would erase each affected cell and rewrite the data by hand. Watching him struggle, Bricklin realized he could use a computer to instantly calculate everything based on underlying formulas. He built VisiCalc, the world's first electronic spreadsheet. Spreadsheets changed how we work with numbers — we didn’t have to think sequentially or do manual math anymore. In the words of tech pioneer Ted Nelson: "When you made a change in one place, all other things changed instantly and automatically." Over time, spreadsheets evolved to add features like visualizations and real-time collaboration. We know how that story goes. But finance didn’t start in the late 70s — it’s been around for millennia. Spreadsheets are ubiquitous now, but they’re a recent addition in a long line of tools humans have used to manage money. We’re doing a deep dive into the evolution of finance tools. Join us as we talk to Paul Barnhurst about: - The history of financial tools—from ancient Sumerian clay tokens to modern cloud-based software—and how they’ve shaped the way businesses operate. - Why traditional tools are struggling to keep up with the needs of modern companies. - How new solutions are making finance accessible, collaborative, and clear for everyone. It’s happening on August 22nd at 10am PT. Link’s below 👇

Values only matter if they’re actually *used*. When we’d started Runway, we had a nice set of values that everyone liked. But we didn’t talk about them enough, so they were quickly forgotten. So we took the things we say everyday, and turned those into our values instead: 1. Give a shit → We say this a lot. Anyone can do a job, but you have to be a certain kind of person to really give a shit about it – to care deeply and own the problem. Giving a shit can’t be forced. 2. Raise the bar → We want to push the boundaries of what's possible, not just be the best. We want to be the benchmark others aspire to, the standard *they* give a shit about. It’s important to get better and better, and to constantly move in the right direction. 3. Build trust → ‘Trust by default’ was one of our old values, but it’s passive. It doesn’t require any action. It can also encourage conflict avoidance because if you’re expected to trust someone, you’ll be less likely to disagree with them. ‘Building trust’ keeps people on their toes – it takes a lot of work, and it makes sure you give a shit and keep raising the bar. 4. Create clarity → Creating clarity helps us share the same vision, which helps us get aligned and move faster. Because our team already embodies these values, we have a feedback loop that makes them even more powerful. They keep becoming a deeper reflection of who we really are.

I’ll say it again and again: if I were on the outside following Runway's launch, I’d be thinking, “Damn it! I wish I were on that team.” But hell yeah! I am on that team already. Working with the smartest and kindest bunch out there✌️🚀
Just got back home from our Runway team gathering, and I couldn't be prouder of what we achieved this week. Our launch surpassed all our expectations, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible efforts of everyone involved: Our team: Literally the best team in the game. I am constantly amazed at how we continue to raise the bar and am so grateful to work alongside all of you Nabeel Shahid, Vasudha Pande, Richard Klein, Amy Devereux, Israel Ramirez, Wells Riley, Siqi Chen, Annie Wu, Nadine Mansour, Rishi Tripathy Our customers: Now that we’ve officially launched, we are even more appreciative of our customers who have been with us from the very beginning. Our investors: They keep the lights on and are our biggest supporters. Their enthusiasm for this launch didn’t go unnoticed and played a huge role in amplifying our launch. Our creative partners: Malcolm Pullinger and the Even/Odd team, who worked with us over the last few months to create the launch video. Brilliant (also a Runway customer), who helped execute our launch gift idea. @Kadao, our awesome video editor. And Alex Hollenbeck + Brent Kulwicki, who helped get our website fully live and functioning. Our community: Being tagged in posts praising our launch from people I’ve never met to watching Paul Barnhurst, The FPandA Guy do Runway’s first-ever unboxing video on LinkedIn Live was an incredible feeling and definitely the cherry on top of everything that went into this launch. Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this launch a success! 🚀
