Are you staying on top of your HR compliance strategies? These two news stories are a must read. 🔥 Hot U.S. News - HR | Business 🔥 📌 MOST NONCOMPETES BANNED NATIONWIDE 🚫 On Tuesday, April 23, 2024, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) approved banning most new noncompete clauses in employment contracts—a ruling affecting millions of workers. The ruling makes noncompetes unenforceable except for those covering senior executives defined as a “policy-making position” worker earning more than $151,164 annually. The ruling goes into effect 120 days following publication in the Federal Register. However, legal challenges could delay the ruling.⏳ Check out the FTC’s announcement here: https://lnkd.in/erCyDUXC 📌 MINIMUM SALARY INCREASED FOR OVERTIME EXEMPTION 💸 The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced a final ruling to increase the salary threshold exemption for overtime by +60%. The ruling has a two-part approach with the first increase taking effect from July 1, 2024, where the threshold salary will rise from $35,568/year ($684/week) to $43,888/year ($844/week), and the second increase will take effect on January 1, 2025, when the threshold salary will increase to $58,656/year ($1,128/week). In addition, the Highly Compensated Employee exemption will increase to $132,964/year on July 1, 2024, and then to $151,164/year on January 1, 2025. Employees must be paid at least the minimum threshold salary and meet specific duties tests to qualify for the salary exemption. If they do not meet these requirements, they must be paid 1.5 times their regular hourly rate for any hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. However, legal challenges could delay the ruling. ⏳ Check out the DOL ruling here: https://lnkd.in/eDunsbdd ✨ EMPLOYER STRATEGIES ✨ 🤔 Partner with HR to develop your customized strategy, which could include tapping into legal. 🔊 Communicate with employees openly and frequently (they’re likely already talking about this). 💸 Noncompete Ban: Assess who qualifies as a “senior executive” subject to the noncompete agreement and who doesn't. Determine what, if anything, needs to be changed or updated to protect the company while complying with the law. Evaluate and update employee retention and engagement strategies to retain key team members and ensure continued success. 💰 Salary Exemption Threshold: Evaluate the available budget options, such as paying for overtime or adjusting salaries. Decide which roles, if any, will need to be reclassified from salaried (exempt) and provide training for the reclassified employees. Determine the effective date of any change(s) and align it with the DOL date(s) while also assessing whether any modifications need to be made to the compensation ranges. 👀 Keep an eye on both rulings as they could evolve. 👀 #treatpeoplewell #HR #FractionalHR #FractionalPeople #PeopleOps #HRConsulting #talentmanagement #noncompete #FLSA #overtime #employeeretention #businessstrategies

Why do tech founders love fractional people ops? Because they can focus on building the tech. ⚒️ The tech industry thrives on innovation. Antiquated business models and traditional ways of doing things are continuously reimagined to fit into our modern world. It's no surprise then that fractional leadership has become a go-to option for tech companies. 💰 Fractional leaders are cost-effective at a time when startup funding has slowed and businesses need to be smart with their cash. 👀 Fractional leaders bring C-level experience and unbiased perspectives to an organization. ✨ Fractional leaders are nimble and creative because they've worked with a variety of clients. The benefits are huge and it's a win-win decision for many companies. My biggest tip for hiring fractional leadership for your organization is to consider the whole picture. Look for seasoned executives who have been in the game for a while and remember that it's more cost-efficient to spend more on hiring the right person for the job. AI is a hot topic across industries and the discussion often comes back to a central question: will AI replace our jobs? 🤔 AI thought leaders continue to emphasize that AI is here for the humans, to augment our work and help us accel our jobs. I agree this is the way forward and last week, I participated in a roundtable discussion with other HR leaders to learn more about bringing AI to our work. The team at BarRaiser hosted a thoughtful discussion in partnership with the Harvard Faculty Club about ways to integrate AI into HR. I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion and came away with valuable insights. It was also great to connect with other HR leaders and exchange ideas on how AI can be leveraged to enhance our work. How have you integrated AI into your workflows and what have you learned in the process? #AIinHR #HRLeaders #WorkSmarterNotHarder

🤔Why offer big benefits as a small business? Employee retention. Whether you’re offering a service or developing proprietary tech, it pays to treat your people well. In 2021 Anita Kurl approached me to create a benefits package for their salon employees. Typically, salons work on a commission model or in some cases stylists have to rent a space in the salon to offer services and earn their comp. This is not usually an employee-friendly compensation model and turnover is common. Anita Kurl did it differently and offered full-time employment, disability, medical and dental benefits for employees. It’s not cheap to offer these benefits but they had their eyes on the potential return on investment. Let’s unpack the HR strategy here: 🌟Anita Kurl has a reputation for highly specialized expertise and trains every employee to meet the highest standards. 💸Losing those trained employees would cost a lot of money and risk their reputation. 🚫Most salons don’t offer benefits or regular employment to stylists.  🤝Recruiting top talent is easier when you have competitive pay and benefits. 🫶Talented employees make the business a success.  ✨Treating people right drives employee retention and customer happiness overall. This example is both unique and universal. While it’s rare for a hair salon to offer competitive pay and benefits, small businesses can compete and win in the marketplace with the right HR strategies and programs. In an industry where a few bad Google reviews can quickly tank your business, it’s critical to recruit and retain top talent. Anita Kurl understood the value of employee retention for the overall health of the business and doubled down on employee happiness to achieve their goals. If you’re considering offering benefits or evaluating your retention strategy this year but don’t know where to start, reach out and I can offer a free consultation to discuss your goals. Terminating an employee is never easy but this one really stings. It’s one thing to be the people in the room but we’re now all flies on the wall watching Brittany Pietsch’s uncomfortable and suspicious firing. The big HR lesson here isn’t to always act like you’re being recorded. The real lesson is that treating people well is good for business and quite honestly the right thing to do. Cloudflare is officially under the microscope and this video will impact how they attract new top talent, win customers, and maintain their stronghold in the market. I feel for everyone on this call, Brittany for not getting concrete details on how her performance didn’t meet expectations and for the HR reps who likely had no choice but to just follow orders. What’s your take on this video and how could it have been handled better?
