RWJBarnabas Health has been awarded a grant from the New Jersey Food Security Initiative (NJFSI) to support a first-of-its-kind program in New Jersey to embed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Navigators in each of our 12 acute care hospitals. The goal of the program is to improve food security and reduce hunger by enhancing access to food, a healthy diet, and nutrition education for low-income residents. Under the initiative, highly trained navigators in each of our acute care hospitals will work closely with individuals to enroll them in SNAP and connect them with other food access resources, including the appropriate county office in their county. Doctors from the Children’s Heart Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children's Hospital of New Jersey, part of our Children’s Health network and the only pediatric heart surgery center in N.J., recently performed life-saving surgery on a two-year-old patient suffering from a rare congenital heart disease. The surgery included a patch of the pulmonary artery. Nyle Eck, a two-year-old from Belize, was born with a rare congenital heart disease called supravalvular pulmonary stenosis (SVPS), a narrowing of the artery located just above the pulmonary valve, which is the main artery that carries blood to the lungs. Nyle was first diagnosed in September 2022, when he was only three months old. With the help of Gift of Life NJ Inc., a charitable organization with a mission to help save the lives of children with congenital heart defects around the world by providing resources to treat them, he was able to have a cardiac procedure a few months later in Belize, but his condition soon required a second more complex surgery not available in Belize. After a short wait, the Gift of Life NJ Inc. sponsored Nyle to travel to the United States with his mother, Sheena Bernardez. Upon their arrival, Nyle began treatment with the team of pediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgeons at Newark Beth. The Institute for Nursing Excellence’s Nursing Orientation Unit for RN Integration, Support, and Health (NOURISH™) Program - a unique model for orienting newly licensed #nurses on a dedicated orientation unit - has been rolled out over the past several months at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset and Community Medical Center-Toms River, NJ. The cornerstone of the program is facilitating integration into the nursing profession and nursing team by providing support and prioritizing well-being. In this innovative program, the unit is geared towards supportive teaching and learning to ease the transition into the practice of professional nursing and mitigate challenges as new graduates enter practice. Clinical experiences are planned and provided through the support of Preceptors and on-unit dedicated Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Practitioners, as well as other educational resources. Rather than starting orientation on their home unit, the new graduate starts in the NOURISH™ Program's dedicated orientation unit, which serves as the ideal environment for experiential learning. This provides for the assimilation of new staff members into the team, goal-directed precepting, direct and timely two-way feedback and ongoing support and mentoring.
