  • Congratulations to Txuj Ci HMong Language and Culture Lower Campus Principal May Lee Xiong for being selected for the presitigous 2024 Bush Foundation fellowship. Bush Fellows are leaders who are already doing amazing things in their communities — and they have big ideas for what more is possible. Xiong is reimagining education to support Black, Indigenous and people of color to thrive in schools that celebrate their diverse identities. She grew up feeling disconnected from her own Hmong culture. After hearing the stories of her resilient immigrant parents, she began to truly embrace her heritage. With her Bush Fellowship, she will seek ways to deepen her understanding of language revitalization and build her skills to advocate for transformative changes in public education. Today at the Coalition to Advance Future Student Success ESSER Summit, the "Investment to Impact" session featured Adam Kunz, Assistant Superintendent for Saint Paul Public Schools, and Andrew Strope, Deputy Superintendent for Indianapolis Public Schools, moderated by Beth Hawkins, Senior Writer and National Correspondent for The 74 Media. They discussed how their districts utilize ESSER funding to meet student needs. “We realized we had to make the most out of this incredible opportunity,” said Strope. In St. Paul they conducted multiple town halls to inform the community how ESSER funds were being utilized and said that “transparency” was important.  Council Executive Director Raymond Hart and Roberto Rodriguez, Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education, dsicussed how ESSER investments are still making a difference in education. “High dosage and high-quality tutoring is really paying off,” said Rodriguez. “We have to identify what works and continue to sustain it. There is an opportunity to think about innovation. We have the answers and we know what our kinds need to thrive. We have to carry that vision and determination forward.”

Nex Benedict is one of too many LGBTQIA+ students who should be alive today. A recent report reveals that school hate crimes against LGBTQIA+ students have doubled in recent years, rising even sharper in states with laws restricting LGBTQIA+ students' rights. At Saint Paul Public Schools, we work hard to create a safe and welcoming school environment that fosters positive self-esteem, acceptance and affirmation, respect for others, and academic success for all, especially our gender expansive students, families and staff members. We do this through our SPPS Gender Inclusion Policy, counselors and other staff who support students daily, school-based Gender and Sexuality Alliances, the Gender and Sexual Diversity Parent Advisory Council, and the work of the SPPS Out for Equity program. Please visit the Out for Equity website for upcoming events, celebrations, resources and ways to get involved at spps.org/outforequity. Individuals who would like to request support from the Office of Equity are welcome to do so here: https://bit.ly/3TEI0NL.
