A team of Saint Vincent Hospital clinicians recently returned from a week-long medical mission to Guatemala where they provided medical and surgical care for low-income, disadvantaged patients. They visited the Hospital de San Pedro in Antigua, a hospital run by the Catholic Church, where they operated on more than 130 patients. The team consisted of Dr. David Kim, plastic and reconstructive surgeon and medical director of the medical mission trip, Dr. Michele Sinopoli, CMO and OB/GYN specialist, Stephanie Charron, scrub tech and mission trip coordinator, Nancy Heindl, RN, OR nurse, Dr. Jason Kass, ENT specialist, Paschal Burden, traveler scrub tech who was at Saint Vincent, and Dr. Paul Arcand, general surgeon. Among the various surgeries the team performed were hernia, gallbladder, hysterectomy, tonsil and adenoid removal, deviated septum, plastics and reconstruction of the hand. The mission was sponsored by Surgicorps International, a charity organization that provides free surgical and medical care to people in need in developing countries. Thank you to all for volunteering your time to care for these patients in need!

Congratulations to those employees who were recognized during our Better Together Recognition program. The monthly program highlights stories of collaboration in the care our team delivers. It also highlights those who go above and beyond to benefit patients, co-workers, the organization and the community. Congratulations again to all our August honorees!

Congratulations to Cindy Lebel, RN, Staffing Office Nursing Supervisor, for being our newest DAISY Award winner! We are so proud of her accomplishments by going above and beyond to provide exceptional care to our patients. Cindy is highly regarded by both our patients and her colleagues. Her nomination from one of our patients is as follows: ‘Cindy is amazing--not only was she kind but caring as well. She made me feel comfortable and was very informative. She took her time and explained everything. Cindy also took the time to explain to the new nurse about the colors of the needle gauges. I had a hard life but my nurses made me feel comfortable and safe, and it is very important to me to feel safe. Cindy’s actions, even when small, made a big difference in my and other patient’s lives. There has been many times I haven’t felt safe or comfortable but Cindy’s interaction was so real I felt so safe. She cared and listened to me about my pain. Cindy made a big difference and I thank her for that!’ Congratulations Cindy! The Diseases Attacking the Immune System (DAISY) Foundation was formed in November 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died of an autoimmune disease at the age of 33. The Barnes family were deeply touched by the kind and compassionate nursing care Patrick received they established the DAISY Award in Patrick’s honor and memory.

Jason Kass, MD, an ear, nose, and throat surgeon completed his 100th Inspire Therapy procedure today. Inspire is an implantable device that is an alternative treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who are unable to tolerate sleeping with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, approximately 20% of people in the US experience at least mild symptoms of sleep apnea, with 1 in 15 people experiencing moderate to severe symptoms. Congratulations to Dr. Kass and his team on achieving this great milestone!
