It’s coming! A new day service center for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness (Ages 16 to 24). 🏬 Our shower and laundry trailer will continue to help provide showers and laundry for unsheltered youth and young adults across Central Florida. This will help us to meet them where they are. But also, due to the barrier of transportation, we will also be providing transportation to and from the center! Renovations are happening now. Keep this project in prayer as we continue to move forward. More to come! Including a future ribbon cutting in Q4 2024 🎀 ✂️ Central Florida has one of the highest concentrations of youth and young adult homelessness in the US 😔 Your support helps SALT to continue to grow to meet the growing needs of people experiencing homelessness. SALT Sanford is going strong! @springmeadowschurch is a key partner in spearheading SALT’s effort to serve the unsheltered and end homelessness in Sanford. Not only do they volunteer their time, constantly do clothing and hygiene drives for the organization, but they also presented SALT with a $28,000 check to help continue the operation in Sanford! Alongside them and the Universal Studios Foundation and other private donors we have been able to sustain our effort in Sanford three days a week! Church partnerships are crucial to the success of SALT’s mission. Ok so first, imagine experiencing homelessness. Ok now, imagine it, while having to be confined to a wheelchair ♿️ Having a physical disability, adds so many more barriers for people experiencing homelessness. And unfortunately, we’re seeing an increase in people with disabilities (especially seniors), living on the street. Most people with disabilities are not able to work. And if they aren’t able to work, their fixed disability income is not able to keep up with the rising rent and cost of living. Having ADA bathrooms 🚽 with showers 🚿 is very important to us. We have two shower trailers with ADA compatibility. We break down two barriers this way. We can meet people with disabilities where they are with our mobile trailers, and continue to meet them where they are by providing these ADA bathrooms and showers. While we help support people with disabilities living on the streets with their basic needs, our case management team helps to end their homelessness. You make all of this possible! Our case management team helped end homelessness for two seniors last week! 🏡 ❤️ Unfortunately, half of seniors experiencing homelessness in our community cannot fit in our shelters. Therefore, they are sleeping outside on the street 😔 Your support helps get this very vulnerable population the services they need to survive on the street, and to eventually transition into a safe and permanent space. SALT’s first social experiment! 🧪 How does transportation, or the lack of it, affect people experiencing homelessness? Edwin and Sabrina were determined to find out. Here was the set up: 📍 They were dropped about 30 miles from SALT Outreach’s downtown location. 💵 They each only had $10 - to emphasize how people experiencing homelessness have limited budgets. 📱 They could only use their phones for a few minutes before starting their trip - to emphasize that many unsheltered people don’t have access to internet while traveling. ⏰ They had to start early in the morning, and they only had 3 hours to make it to over to SALT - to emphasize that many people experiencing homelessness have limited time to get to a service provider, before their services fill up - in this case it was to see a case manager. This past Saturday marked 6 months of SALT serving in San Diego! San Diego is the first city outside of Florida that has a shower trailer. The efforts of SALT San Diego have helped provide thousands of meals, the distribution of clothing and hygiene products, and has helped house three families. Can you imagine experiencing homelessness in Florida ☀️🔥 without shoes? How do you protect your feet from bug bites, cuts, bruises, and burns while experiencing homelessness? The street and sidewalk often reaches 160 degrees. Without shoes, and in some cases nice shoes for job interviews, it’s almost impossible to move forward. Thanks to @run__bmt, @phatashbakes, and @lululemon they have collected over 300 shoes and counting. They want to make sure that the thousands of people we see every year have shoes on their feet.
