Dr. Tracy Dixon-Salazar didn’t set out to become a neuroscientist or a geneticist; she just wanted to help her daughter. Her journey began about thirty years ago, when the then-stay-at-home mom’s 2-year-old daughter, Savannah, began having uncontrollable seizures. Her doctors couldn’t give the family answers, so Dixon-Salazar began her own research. Thirty years later, Dixon-Salazar has a doctorate in neurobiology and neurosciences, and her daughter is thriving. Writer, person on TV. Content chief, San Diego Magazine. Judge on Food Network. Partner Del Mar Wine & Food Festival (coming this September)
Been trying to justify my poetry degree for 25 years. Last night was pretty huge in that pursuit. Once a year, the oldest journalism school in the U.S. (Missouri School of Journalism) and about 100 judges from the national media scene nominate the best writing and art and creative work done by the country’s city magazines. The writers at these media companies—Texas Monthly, Chicago, Minneapolis, Portland, Seattle, Philly, etc.—are nuclear talents. A massive honor just to be named next to them. And last night I got the national award for Food Writing. So damn honored. And a cool nod for what the whole creative team at San Diego Magazine is doing. For a couple days, Claire Johnson and I got to trade ideas with some of the top journalists and creatives from cities across the U.S. They’re the people who help build the culture of their cities by telling the stories. Like Stephanie March. I’d listen to her talk or write about food all day. Thanks to the CRMA, University of Missouri, and the wildly talented storytellers we somehow convinced to take the ride with us at SDM.
