Acrylamide ("AA") is a potentially harmful compound found in foods cooked at high temperatures. The formation of AA has been linked to various health problems, including cancer. This study investigates the effect of different thawing methods (microwave, refrigerator, and water immersion) and cooking methods (air frying and deep fat frying) on AA formation in fish, chicken breast, thigh, and wings. Chicken: Air frying resulted in AA levels that were 19.40 μg/kg lower at the maximum compared to deep-fat frying. Fish: Air frying resulted in AA levels that were 10.00 μg/kg lower at the minimum and 3.65 μg/kg lower at the maximum compared to deep-fat frying. These results show that AA formation in fish and chicken meat was lower in air frying than in deep fat frying. This suggests that air frying could be a healthier alternative. On the other hand, the effectiveness of thawing methods was not significant. Read more here: DOI:10.12691/jfnr-12-7-1

📆 Join us on Tues., Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. ET for the public launch of new resources from CancerX’s work to advance equity and reduce financial toxicity in cancer. Patient navigation programming is highly effective in facilitating equitable access to cancer care, reducing financial toxicity, and improving health and quality of life outcomes for cancer patients. However, resource limitations impact the ability of health systems and their partners to scale patient navigation programs to meet comprehensive care needs. These free resources, including an ROI calculator and patient navigation blueprint, will support health systems and patient navigators in developing a business case and digital patient navigation programming strategy – thereby improving access, cost, and health outcomes for more cancer patients. Learn more about how you can use these resources to unlock the promise of digital innovation and minimize disparities in cancer care access and out-of-pocket cost measures associated with cancer. Let’s work together to ensure that health systems can confidently invest in programming that increases equitable access to care and that financial worries do not overshadow cancer patients’ fight for recovery. 🔗 Register now: https://bit.ly/4cuJq3L University of Utah Cancer Support Community Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute Epic University of North Carolina System Oracle

In a two year study of n = 1,785 women with breast cancer, patients received either a telephone-delivered lifestyle intervention with mailed education materials (intervention group "IG") or the low-level intervention group ("LLIG") who received only mailed educational materials with general recommendations for a healthy lifestyle. The intervention was delivered through 19, 30 minute telephone calls that were conducted by trained coaches (nurses or dietitians). Mailed materials included personalized dietary recommendations with daily calorie targets. Patients were encouraged to increase moderate-intensity physical activity ("PA") to at least 150 minutes/week. At 6 months: IG participants had 6.75x higher weight loss compared to LLIG participants. At 12 months: IG participants had 3.5x higher weight loss compared to LLIG participants. At 24 months: IG participants had 2.0x higher weight loss compared to LLIG participants. Weight loss and calorie reduction were sustained at 24 months after intervention. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e8ZtSxYU

A RCT of n = 1,872 patients with type 2 diabetes ("T2DM') followed for 2 years showed digital health intervention led to an almost 20% increase in achieving target health outcomes, mainly improved hemoglobin A1c ("HbA1c"), an important measure of blood sugar control. The digital intervention included regular care with physicians and access to an app that provided personalized health goals, in-app reminders for monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar, and prompts for scheduling doctors visits. The primary outcome was achieving two or more optimal outcomes for blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. A multi-purpose digital health intervention improved T2DM risk factor control rates, particularly in rural communities where there may be stronger relationships between patients and doctors and greater family member support. #digitalhealth #bridgegaps #accesstocare Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e5fi3jSH

A study of n = of 3,276 elderly patients evaluated the association between the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index ("GNRI") and mortality measures. The GNRI is a screening tool that assesses the nutritional risk of elderly patients using body mass index ("BMI") and serum albumin. It has a strong association with the prognosis of various chronic illnesses, including diabetes, heart failure, and cancer. Several studies in cancer patients have shown that the GNRI is more advantageous than serum albumin levels, body weight, or BMI alone. In this study, the group with lower GNRI scores had a 67% higher risk for all-cause mortality and 120% higher risk for cancer-specific mortality. The New Nordic Renal Diet ("NNRD") is a whole-food approach, tailored to meet dietary guidelines in patients with moderate chronic kidney disease (stage 3b–4). The NNRD is adapted from the New Nordic Diet that incorporates 80% plant-based food products and 20% animal products, a healthy balance. The NNRD allowed for 2 servings of fish, egg yolks and poultry per week, omitting red meat and food additives, and including fruits, nuts and vegetables that were seasoned with herbs and spices. Quality of life ("QoL") was assessed in a RCT of n = 58 patients. During the 26-week intervention period, the NNRD group received food boxes with all foods and recipes each week, free of charge. The intervention group experienced a reduction in pain/discomfort by 26%, compared with no change in the control group. Additionally, the intervention group reported an overall improvement in conducting usual daily activities by 23%, while no change was seen in the control group. This study shows how diet intervention to meet the guideline recommendations in CKD is feasible and is associated with an overall improvement in different variables related to QoL. #QoL #Nordicdiet Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eSsgy-pD

Antioxidant-rich diets are beneficial for many chronic diseases including chronic kidney disease ("CKD"). A recent study aimed to investigate the relationship between the dietary antioxidant score and mortality related to high uric acid levels (blood waste) in CKD patients. In this cohort study, data from n = 3,684 patients were collected and the average follow-up was 63.83 months. The results showed that higher dietary antioxidants intake was associated with 28% lower hyperuricemia related mortality risk among CKD patients. This cohort study shows an association between high antioxidant intake and lower odds of hyperuricemia related death. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e4QiE2ab
