Tonyia Smith, owner of Silver Slice Bakery, found her calling in culinary school during a gluten-free nutrition project. Inspired to create delicious options for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance—like her mother's co-workers who sampled her home baking—she decided to start her own business. Through SCORE, she connected with a mentor who provided expertise in manufacturing, growth strategies and sales projections.

SCORE Mentors reposted this
For the past seven years I have been a volunteer certified mentor with SCORE. Today I reached a milestone in my SCORE involvement having just finished a mentoring session with my 300th nonprofit client. My clients have come from 25 states and 4 countries. Since 1964, SCORE has helped more than 17 million entrepreneurs start, grow or successfully exit a business. SCORE's 10,000 volunteers provide free, expert mentoring, resources and education in all 50 U.S. states and territories. While most SCORE mentors assist emerging small business owners there are many individuals who want to start a new nonprofit organization or need help advancing their organization to the next level of effectiveness. I'm glad to be one of the SCORE mentors who specialize in coaching and advising nonprofits. “I’m humbled to have the opportunity to speak at TD Bank’s Empowering Black Entrepreneurs event with Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival and SCORE. It’s a reminder that dreams do come true, and sometimes, they exceed our wildest expectations.” — Janelle "J'Nelle" Richardson on her experience as a SCORE volunteer. How do you #SOARwithSCORE?
