A recent study by Striano et al. (2024) published in The Spine Journal reveals an alarming concern about radiation exposure during adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) surgery. The findings show that conventional intraoperative CT navigation systems can increase a patient's lifetime cancer risk by up to 236 times compared to traditional fluoroscopy. This means that nearly 1 in every 1,000 children undergoing AIS surgery could face this serious risk.
