Finally got to read this write-up on Behavioral Health evolution by Flare Capital Partners. There are no surprises with the key findings we all know: 1) professional shortages 2) lack of access 3) increased demand It is great to see 'Self-Managed Care', 'Staff Augmentation' and 'Outcome Measurements' as key areas too - all key areas we are working on at Sentur using our 'Blended Care' approach. With AI, I believe Digital Therapeutics will make a come back. From first hand experience trying to build some type of a workflow using DialogFlow in 2020 vs an LLM in 2024 - it is a drastic different experience and the use cases and experience are 10x if not 100x better. As these technologies get better, the experience will also get better as long as it is combined with a responsible approach to deployment in the hands of patients. Exciting times ahead! Thrilled to share our experience at the Digitalk Conference in Sofia! This gathering of minds in digital innovation and AI has provided a fertile ground for discussing pressing issues in our global economy and in the future of AI and technology in addressing these issues. One critical challenge discussed by Akis Bratsos from Lakestar was the supply chain in health care and how AI could be supportive of this. As innovators on the front line in mental health and addiction recovery, we can confirm with a resounding yes that this is a major issue. Earlier this year, at the Psychotherapy Associates Winter Symposium, state officials presented data that unequivocally shows the scale of this issue. Unfortunately, according to the data, things are only going to get worse, a lot worse (65% increase in need for addiction treatment services and a 15% expected decline in available clinicians, YIKES!). It was exciting for us today to hear the resonance of the supply chain issue again from major investors in the field and the shared potential and spirit of urgency in the need to address the problem. It is one more way to validate what we at Sentur already have as a thesis on AI and mental health care, particularly in delivering blended, trauma-informed care for substance use. It is through the intentional, responsible, and bold development of cutting-edge tech solutions together with subject-matter experts in trauma care and addiction recovery that we can address the shortage in resources and continuum of care. While some may consider it unreasonable to consider such a vision (which, according to Bogdan Iordache from Underline Ventures, is a great thing 😉), we believe it is the only path forward. People's lives will depend on it. Part of our work in addressing the supply chain issue is designing and developing our groundbreaking solution for substance abuse facilities, Optima. Our commitment is to revolutionize mental health care by integrating cutting-edge technology with compassionate, client-centered solutions. Congrats to Click Therapeutics, Inc. and David Benshoof Klein on launching their latest FDA approved DT : 'Rejoyn' - for patients with depression. Plus I love the message on their website: "Rejoyn isn't a wellness app". Yes! 🙌 I get encouraged when I see such developments as I believe this is good example where technology can make a step function difference in helping us solve the enormous challenges in healthcare. That said, the digital health market remains highly fragmented. We continue to invest in silos of care that mimic the fragmented care system without anyone bringing the entire journey together into a cohesive, patient-centric view. We need: 1️⃣ Comprehensive Care Journeys: A single unified journey that brings the full spectrum of human support - from professional care to community and peer support—into a single, seamless digital experience. The design of the journey is critical as it needs to be engaging to drive outcomes which means it really needs to be consumer-grade yet blends clinicians as first-class citizens. Last but not least. the 'connective tissue' of this journey should be the 'digital programming' for whatever condition we are trying to support. This is the piece that will not only empower patients 24/7 but will also propel their journeys and support them when you really have no place to turn to. The "3 AM panic attack call" as we refer to it here at Sentur 2️⃣ Rethinking our approach to solving clinician shortage. Instead of starting with the clinician and then trying to fill in the gap with technology, we should be doing the opposite: start with technology and then figure out the pieces that need human support then blend those into a hybrid & supportive model. As my co-founder, Sarah Houy, MA, LPC, RYT, BCN likes to always say, today we don't expect a surgeon to do nutrition care for patients. Why would be expect the same in behavioral health? There are certain pieces of the journey that can be done extremely effective without a 'professional'. You don't think so? well, how does AA do it? Just to be clear, we don't believe that you can heal without human support. We humans heal in circles but human support as we mentioned above is a full spectrum from professionals, to coaches, to peer to community. Integrating AI into behavioral health tech responsibly is complex and challenging. But it provides an opportunity to significantly enhance the therapeutic journey and individuals' healing. This is what makes the effort worth it and exciting. Our co-founder & co-CEO Faris Sweis shares some insight into how what we are building can enhance the therapeutic experience in substance abuse treatment facilities. He also goes into behind-the-scenes details from building the AI aspect of Sentur. 👇
