A win for #RareDisease patients and their caregivers: In a new bipartisan law, Connecticut marks the 13th state that will provide Medicaid coverage of rapid whole-genome sequencing (rWGS) when deemed medically necessary for critically ill infants. We applaud the collaborative effort of legislators, advocates and healthcare experts to improve access to #rWGS. With the potential to provide expedited results in under 50 hours compared to several weeks with traditional testing, this expedited genetic testing allows medical teams to intervene quickly and make informed decisions that can significantly impact the lives of babies, children and their families. https://lnkd.in/ecKuMW-W #SentynlSeeks

Time and comprehensiveness matter when it comes to #RareDisease. The U.S. Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) is a list of disorders recommended for states to screen as part of their universal #NewbornScreening (#NBS) programs.     RUSP includes 37 primary conditions and 26 secondary conditions, which represent less than 1% of all rare diseases. Widespread adoption of rapid whole-genome sequencing (rWGS) as part of newborn screening could significantly change the diagnostic journey for future families.    Using #rWGS, the BeginNGS™ program at Rady Children's Institute for Genomic Medicine screens infants for hundreds of treatable genetic conditions that are known to be early onset and are not included in standard biochemical newborn screening.    We proudly stand with BeginNGS™ and other initiatives striving to end the rare disease odyssey. #MoCDTypeA is an ultra-rare disease caused by a genetic mutation. While its worldwide incidence is estimated to be 1 per 342,000 to 411,000 live births, #MoCD Type A prevalence remains uncertain and may be underdiagnosed.    This #RareDisease is rapidly progressive, presenting symptoms such as seizures, abnormal muscle tone and difficulty feeding.     Interested in learning more?
