Serenity House Oakland: Fostering Sisterhood, Empowering Lives, Inspiring Change

About us

Serenity House Oakland is a beacon of hope, offering a sisterhood that nurtures the well-being and economic independence of women. Our initiatives, like the Serenity Wellness and Business (SWB) program, provide a 16-week entrepreneurial journey emphasizing wellness and professional development. This unique program intertwines yoga, art, and business workshops to empower women, translating their life experiences into purposeful careers. Established in 2009, we've grown to offer a comprehensive suite of services, including recovery housing, substance-abuse treatment, and support for women affected by domestic violence and those reentering society post-incarceration. Our approach is highly individualized, addressing each woman's journey through counseling, healing groups, and case management. Success at Serenity House is tangible, with over 74% of our clients maintaining sobriety after nine months in our program, a testament to our effective model. Moreover, 60% of our staff are former clients, now guiding others towards similar transformations. We also extend our support to the broader community through our 'Sharing is Caring' outreach, providing meals and essential items to those in need. We're more than an organization; we're a community committed to fostering lasting change. As we look forward, we're excited about the opening of Sisters House for long-term housing, ensuring a continuum of care. At Serenity House Oakland, we believe in the power of unity and the strength of the women we serve. Join us in our mission to empower, heal, and inspire.

  • "We see women coming from a place of trauma, there is a generalized mistrust of institutionalized systems, and they're also very fearful to access healthcare... which may antagonize their abuser," explains our executive director, Melissa Hellums during her recent feature on Fox KTVU's "The Nine." This segment focused on Assembly Bill 3127, a proposed law that, if passed by the California Senate, would remove the mandatory reporting of all domestic abuse cases to law enforcement by healthcare professionals. Instead, doctors would only need to notify police if the patient explicitly requests it or if the victim is a child or elder. Melissa sheds light on why many survivors are reluctant to seek medical help, fearing repercussions that could exacerbate their situation. This bill aims to create a safer environment for domestic violence victims to access the care they need without the added pressure of automatic police involvement. Watch her interview below ⤵

  • Did you know? While autism is often seen as a predominantly male condition, research shows that 1 in 54 girls are diagnosed with it. Girls and women with autism often present differently, leading to under-diagnosis and misdiagnosis. They may exhibit subtler symptoms or camouflage their challenges, making it harder to recognize their needs. 💙 Today, on Autism Awareness Day, we shine a light on the unique experiences of women and girls on the spectrum. #WorldAutismAwarenessDay #WorldAutismMonth #WAM #Autism #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #serenityhouseoakland #womenempowerment #healingjourneys #communitysupport #nonprofit #sisterhood #womensupportingwomen #serenityhouseoakland #alameda #alamedacounty
