🚀 SETDA commends the Federal Communications Commission decision to expand the E-Rate program to cover Wi-Fi hotspots. This practical update will help schools better address the persistent digital access divide impacting students across the nation. “This decision is another significant step towards modernizing our school systems,” said Julia Fallon, Executive Director of SETDA. “By ensuring students have access to reliable internet connectivity, we provide equitable, anytime/anywhere learning opportunities and connect them to their teachers and school community beyond the physical classroom walls.” 👏 We applaud the FCC for its commitment to updating the E-Rate program and look forward to working with educational leaders nationwide to implement these changes effectively. https://setda.info/3Wp5asN #EdTech #SETDA

During a critical time when education leaders are working hard day in and day out to sustain gains from their pandemic recovery efforts, it's been disappointing to see critical programs proposed to be removed in the FY25 House appropriations bill. Today, the U.S. Department of Education released "Designing for Education with Artificial Intelligence: An Essential Guide for Developers." You’re gonna see lots of people talking about the guide, but here are two select highlights, both focused on responsibility: 🥞 Responsibility/Innovation Stack: Tech companies use the term “development stack” to describe how products are built from layered or connected components (infrastructure, backend, frontend, development environments), each serving a specific function in the development process. The guide introduces a “responsibility stack” as parallel measures for acting responsibly when developing AI tools that mirror related layers in the development stack. It’s a handy way of operationalizing many of the recommendations in the guide. See the image on page 8. 🤝 Shared Responsibility: It isn’t just teachers’ responsibility to figure out AI in education, but also the developers, non-profits, and the government. In addition to teachers teaching with and about AI, AI literacy development will require developers addressing the “unprepared user risk” as noted in the guide, non-profits supporting slower moving or overloaded school systems, the government providing guidance, funding, and regulations, and departments of education creating standards and funding professional development. Take the time to read it, even if you aren’t an edtech developer. It’s practical (as much as a federal guidance doc can be), easy to parse, and has many substantive points. As for my responsibility, I’m committing to amplifying the guide’s points in my convos with ed tech developers, ed leaders, and policymakers. Look for the same messages echoed in TeachAI resources. Shout out to everyone involved in this work, like the US ED crew of Roberto J. Rodríguez, Anil H., Bernadette Adams, and Kevin Johnstun. Special shout-out to my colleagues at Digital Promise, Jeremy Roschelle, Anthony Baker, Pati R., Eric Nentrup, Gabrielle Lue, and Sarah Beth Martin. When we look back on our country's successes per AI in education years from now, the thought leadership and messages these resources tilled into the soil of our collective consciousness will just be taken for granted (a good thing). 🤝 SETDA has joined with ISTE, 1EdTech Consortium, CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology), Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), Digital Promise, and InnovateEDU to work together and establish five Quality Indicators for EdTech and AI Products. 💻 This collaboration aims to reduce the massive duplication of effort in school districts nationwide that go through detailed review processes for apps before they can be approved for use. A consistent set of quality indicators, when validated by trusted experts, saves time for school leaders who are already overwhelmed with other critical responsibilities. ➡ Learn more about how we can ease the burden on schools: https://lnkd.in/gc6-KTeN
