  • NSA Opposes Proposed Sale of Vista Sporting Products to CSG Dear Chairman Callahan and members of the Board: As the President and Executive Director of the National Sheriffs’ Association, representing the Nation’s 3,081 Sheriffs, we are compelled to once again voice our profound opposition to the proposed sale of Vista Sporting Products to Czechoslovak Group (CSG). The National Sheriffs’ Association has been following this situation closely given the profound impact that foreign ownership of Vista Sporting Products could have on the law enforcement community. We understand that Vista Outdoor’s Board of Directors is scheduled to convene a special meeting of stockholders on September 27, 2024, to consider the proposed transaction. In advance of your upcoming meeting, we call on Vista Outdoor’s Board of Directors to reconsider its decision to sell Vista Sporting Products to CSG, or any other foreign owned entity. • NSA Board of Directors member Sheriff Garry McFadden of Mecklenburg County, NC released an opinion piece regarding the ongoing fentanyl crisis. Read below. NC sheriff: Donald Trump and Kamala Harris must commit to closing this deadly fentanyl loophole | Opinion | By Garry McFadden The presidential nominees from the Democratic and Republican parties have a lot to say about the crisis at our southern border and the illegal drugs making their way into the United States via cartel smugglers. On average, 300 North Carolinians lose their lives to overdose each month. In 2023, about 107,542 people died from a drug overdose – nearly 300 people a day – and the main driver of these deaths is opioids. But this dark trend won’t end with a secure border as long as a little-known trade rule remains in place. As the 2024 presidential race heats up, it’s time for Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump to address this crisis. • AMERICAN SHERIFF ALLIANCE ISSUES CALL FOR ACTION AGAINST TREN DE ARAGUA Leadership from the nation’s sheriffs’ associations demands attention to the threat this Venezuelan-based gang poses to public safety in communities across America Last week, law enforcement across the country was notified that the Venezuelan-based gang, Tren de Aragua (TDA), had issued a “green light” to its members to attack and fire upon U.S. law enforcement officers. The gang, which originated in the Venezuelan prison system, boasts a membership of over 5,000 members and many have made their way into the United States. Members of TDA have been linked to violent crimes across the country, including the recent arrest of an individual in Denver linked to a brutal beating of a jewelry store owner during an armed robbery which occurred on June 24th. TDA participates in human smuggling and trafficking, kidnapping, extortion schemes, and moving illicit narcotics in their areas of operation. Since U.S. Customs and Border Protection had its first apprehension of a TDA member in March 2023, there have been 70 additional apprehensions within the United States. The total number of TDA members operating in the United States is unknown due to the number of “got-a-ways” entering the country, as well as those who may have been recruited domestically since TDA has showed its presence in the country. “When we allow a brutal and violent gang, like TDA, to operate in the United States, we have failed in terms of border security,” said Sheriff Kieran Donahue, NSA President. “TDA is the latest example where failed policies have allowed violent gangs and criminal cartels into our country who subsequently commit heinous acts of violence and cause fear in our communities.” Read the full release: https://rb.gy/c71ag7
