  • ✨ Meet SHRM-KC Board Member Renee Goodin Elliott, SPHR, our 2024 Programming and IEDB Co-Chair ✨ "As the Chief Human Resources Officer at Essense of Australia, I’ve had the privilege of being a part of SHRM-KC since 2001, when my leader at Arthur J. Gallagher introduced me to the chapter. I was completely captivated by the wealth of information shared during our monthly meetings at the Arrowhead Club, and I’ve been an engaged member ever since! One of my favorite aspects of SHRM-KC is our monthly programs—they offer an incredible amount of information to help us stay current in our profession. As an HR professional and a leader, I spend much of my time developing others, so it’s refreshing to dedicate a few hours each month to my own development. Plus, being a highly social person, I really enjoy our Membership Socials!   I was originally recruited to join the SHRM-KC Board to assist with the College Relations group, and I’ve continued to serve because I find a great deal of fulfillment in volunteering, collaborating with fellow HR professionals, and giving back to the HR community. SHRM-KC has had a significant impact on my professional journey, providing me with the resources I needed for my career development—from continuing education and certification to invaluable mentorship opportunities.   An interesting fact about me is that my undergraduate degree is in Apparel Marketing from K-State, and I began my career in retail store management. HR became my "second career" when I realized how much I enjoyed hiring, training, and developing team members in my first management position. Today, I’m fortunate to work for an amazing global bridal gown organization, which allows me to blend my background in fashion with my HR expertise." #BoardMemberSpotlight #SHRMKC

  • SHRM is urging individuals to contact their U.S. senators and representatives to support the Employer Participation in Repayment Act (H.R. 9164/S. 4778), which would allow employers to permanently help employees repay student loans tax-free under Section 127 of the Internal Revenue Code. Currently, Section 127 permits up to $5,250 per year in educational assistance without tax penalties, but this provision is set to expire on January 1, 2026. High levels of student debt impact employees' financial and mental well-being, which in turn affects workplace productivity. Tax-free employer student loan repayment assistance can improve employee satisfaction, well-being, and act as a valuable tool for recruitment and retention. Contacting your senators and representatives is quick and easy if you are a SHRM Advocacy (A-Team) member! Sign up here, https://lnkd.in/gxWmRKKp #SHRM #ATeam #SHRMKC

  • 🌟Meet Paige Fryback, a proud SHRM-KC Mentee in our Mentoring Program! 🌟 "As the Human Resources Coordinator at Musselman & Hall Contractors, my role involves a wide range of responsibilities including recruitment, working on process improvements, managing employee changes, and several other tasks. I also lead and attend college career fairs, maintain partnerships with area high schools and technical schools, as well as oversee the onboarding process to ensure that new employees have a welcoming and positive experience. Musselman & Hall, and its leadership, promote professional and personal growth. The Mentoring Program has been instrumental in my development. Shortly after I started my supervisor, Kevin Mannel, SHRM-CP and SHRM-KC Member, invited me to attend the SHRM-KC Annual Conference, which strengthened my passion for Human Resources. Especially as it pertains to company culture and the well-being of employees, as well as highlighting the importance of ongoing professional development. To further this growth, I joined the Mentoring Program to gain insights from another experienced HR professional." My mentor, Kristin, has been exceptional in providing fresh perspectives and valuable guidance. Our sessions consistently leave me inspired and motivated to explore new strategies and achieve my goals. Whether it's stepping out of my comfort zone, trying different approaches to building relationships, or advancing my career, Kristin's suggestions have been extremely helpful. Overall, the last year there has been significant growth for me, and the mentorship has played a crucial role. The program has empowered me to ask insightful questions and to think about different perspectives prior to approaching a situation. The support and advice I've received throughout this mentorship has been invaluable in my professional and personal journey." • A Texas federal court struck down the FTC's proposed nationwide ban on non-compete agreements, allowing employers to continue using them under state laws. The ruling, made by Judge Ada Brown, found that the FTC overstepped its authority and deemed the rule "arbitrary and capricious." This decision, influenced by the recent Supreme Court ruling that limits agency power, means employers won’t have to comply with the ban by the previously set September 4 date. While an appeal is possible, it's unlikely to succeed. Employers should review and ensure their non-competes comply with state-specific laws.
