We’re excited to share the great news about the launch of the Bay Area Housing Innovation Fund, which kicks off with a $50 million initial investment thanks to a unique collaboration between the San Francisco Housing Accelerator Fund, Sobrato Philanthropies, Destination: Home, and Apple. In the Bay Area, new affordable developments typically take over five years and cost more than $800,000 per home. The Bay Area Housing Innovation Fund aims to accelerate this process and reduce costs by about 40% with favorable loans for projects that deliver deeply affordable homes more efficiently. With $50 million from the founding partners, the fund will support at least four projects serving 400 households - twice as many as traditional methods. Nearly half of these homes will be reserved for formerly homeless or extremely low-income households. Let's continue our work together to end homelessness! At a recent briefing in Palo Alto, Alison Kamhi from the Immigration Legal Resource Center highlighted the profound impact of immigration policies on our region, noting that about 40% of residents in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties were born outside the U.S. Leaders from Jewish Family Service of San Diego, Asian Law Alliance, Coastside Hope, and the City of San José shared stories of resilience and innovative partnerships that are making a difference. Public-private collaborations are proving essential to creating effective, durable solutions to the immigration issues facing the country. July marks National Black Family Month, a time to honor the resilience, strength, and rich cultural heritage of Black families. Established in 2006, this month promotes education, health, and self-improvement while fostering deeper connections and support within the community. As we celebrate, we must also recognize the systemic challenges Black families face, including economic disparities, housing discrimination, systemic racism, and unconscious biases. Addressing these issues is essential for building a just and equitable society. Black families often encounter under-resourced schools, employment discrimination, and persistent wage gaps. Housing discrimination, rooted in historical redlining policies, continues to impact access to quality housing and healthcare. These challenges highlight the urgent need for collective action and systemic change. At Silicon Valley Community Foundation, we are committed to advocating for policies that reduce education gaps, combat employment discrimination, and ensure access to quality healthcare and housing. We believe that supporting Black families in their journey towards equality strengthens our entire community. In honor of National Black Family Month, we encourage you to support the California Black Freedom Fund, an initiative dedicated to securing, protecting, and advancing the rights of Black communities across California. Your support can help amplify efforts to dismantle systemic barriers and promote economic and social equity for Black families. ➡ https://lnkd.in/dQMfngk #BlackFamilyMonth #EconomicDisparities #HousingDiscrimination #SystemicRacism #UnconsciousBiases

In this insightful Q&A with The Chronicle of Philanthropy, our CEO, Nicole Taylor, discusses the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action, strategies to encourage donor-advised fund (DAF) giving, and more. Dive into the full conversation to learn about the powerful initiatives and commitments driving positive change in our communities!
Q&A: The Silicon Valley Community Foundation's CEO, Nicole Taylor, talks about the effects of the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action at colleges, getting donors to give from their DAFs, and more. The community foundation’s donors gave out nearly $4.6 billion in 2023, a significant increase from the $2.6 billion granted the previous year. That spike, Taylor said, was thanks to some large donors “who really doubled down big on some things that they cared about.” https://bit.ly/3RQR4hl

Silicon Valley Community Foundation stands firmly in support of this statement. Criminalizing homelessness is a step backward in addressing the root causes of this crisis. We believe in humane, effective solutions that provide housing and support services to those in need. Our communities must remain inclusive, safe, and welcoming for all, regardless of housing status. We urge our elected leaders to reject punitive measures and invest in sustainable housing and prevention strategies to truly address homelessness.
We fundamentally reject the #SCOTUS's decision on #JohnsonVGrantsPass today which effectively denies people the right to sleep and criminalizes homelessness. The fact that so many people are living outside in our country is a true societal failure, and now we are making it that much harder for those who are suffering on our streets to simply survive. Every human being has a right to exist in our community, and we cannot exclude people, nor treat people differently, based on their housing status. Our public spaces should remain safe, healthy and welcoming environments for all members of our community - including people experiencing homelessness. The carceral and punitive approaches that may come out of this ruling are not only inhumane, but they have already proven to be ineffective and only serve to perpetuate cycles of homelessness. Today, we are calling on our elected leaders to reject this decision and instead invest more deeply in the housing and prevention strategies that we know are the only true solution to the crisis on our streets.

The 2024 Silicon Valley Pain Index reveals some critical challenges facing our community. San Jose has been named the most expensive large city in the U.S. to live in, with average monthly expenses reaching $3,504 as of 2023. Additionally, Santa Clara County leads the nation in the percentage of unsheltered homelessness and unsheltered, unaccompanied homeless youth. In response to these pressing issues, the BAFHA (Bay Area Housing Finance Authority) board has unanimously voted to place a $20B regional housing bond measure on the ballot for November. This measure aims to address homelessness and housing unaffordability across the Bay Area. Pilar Lorenzana, SVCF Vice President, Community Action, Initiatives and Policy, stated: “We are so grateful for the leadership of Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, Mountain View Councilmember Margaret Abe-Koga, and City of Millbrae Councilmember Gina Papan – and their support for this game-changing solution. If passed by voters, this $20B bond will provide critical support to close the gap for projects waiting in the wings to provide relief against the homelessness and housing unaffordability problems affecting the entire Bay Area region."
