A Smartville Inc. Periscope customer contacted us recently with a puzzle: they had an extracted EV battery with an OEM tag identifying its capacity at 75 kWh. The capacity matched the data from Media Control Unit's display -- "long range" battery -- provided by the seller from which our customer purchased the battery. The puzzling part: a scan by their technician using their new Periscope reported the capacity at only 60 kWh -- a "standard range" battery. Surely the Periscope was malfunctioning? Smartville Inc. immediately investigated, reviewing the report and remotely testing the Periscope for software issues, but everything seemed in order. What gives? We asked the customer to ship us the battery so we could do more testing. And the mystery was solved. Extended testing of the battery using a high-end Chroma battery cycler CONFIRMED Periscope's diagnosis -- it was indeed a mislabeled battery with 60 kWh! How did this happen? You can bet our customer will be having a deeper conversation with the seller of that battery. While we have theories, Smartville Inc. is focused on providing the tools, like Periscope, that give buyers and sellers informed confidence when trading in EVs and second-life batteries. OEM battery data is incomplete, biased, and unreliable. To make the second-life EV battery ecosystem work efficiently and transparently, stakeholders need access to third-party validation.
