The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum maintains the world's largest and most significant collection of aviation and space artifacts, encompassing all aspects of human flight, as well as related works of art and archival materials. It operates two landmark facilities that, together, welcome more than eight million visitors a year, making it the most visited museum in the country. It also is home to the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies.

Congratulations to National Air and Space Museum Board member Tom Haas for receiving the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal last night! In the decade since he joined our Board, he has demonstrated time and time again his ability to identify what our greatest need is — and his willingness to step in and meet that need. This honor is greatly deserved.
From the desk of Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III: It was a pleasure to present the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal to Thomas W. Haas to acknowledge and celebrate his generosity and profound impact on the entire Smithsonian and our National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution. A pilot, flight instructor, and aircraft mechanic, Tom has been instrumental in our work to document and share the history and science of aviation and astronomy with the world. Because of his support and dedication, the National Air and Space Museum has evolved into the remarkable and beloved place it is today. A great example is the “Thomas W. Haas We All Fly” gallery which memorializes the breadth and depth of aviation and the myriad ways flight technology has reshaped our society. Established in 1965, the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal honors individuals who have made distinguished contributions to the advancement of art, science, history, culture, education, or technology. I know I speak for all of us here at the Smithsonian when I say: Thank you, Tom. We are immensely grateful for the potential you see in our work and your commitment to help realize it.

This week we announced that the next galleries to open at the Museum in DC will be “Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall” and “Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight.” These two galleries will open in spring 2025 along with the Lockheed Martin IMAX Theater & the entrance on the National Mall. The remaining galleries will open in phases, with most completed by the building's 50th anniversary in July 2026: - Allan and Shelley Holt Innovations Gallery - “At Home in Space” - “Futures in Space” - Flight and the Arts Center - “Jay I. Happy 20th birthday to our Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center! Our second location, near Dulles Airport in northern Virginia, opened on this day in 2003. At the time of opening, there were 80 aircraft and 60 space artifacts on display. Since then, the Center has grown exponentially, with nearly 200 aircraft on display, over 1,500 more aviation-related artifacts, nearly 1,000 space-related artifacts, and over 100 pieces of art.
