About us
SSC Venture Partners is a venture capital fund made up of BC alums who love entrepreneurship and want to see BC alumni and students successfully launch their own companies. Since 2014, SSC Venture Partners has offered seed funding, a summer accelerator, office space, and mentorship to hundreds of startups with Boston College founders. SSC Venture Partners is uniquely positioned to help launch BC founder led ventures. With a general partnership made of seasoned entrepreneurs and investors, and an LP base of dozens of high net worth BC alumni investors, SSC Venture Partners can invest in promising startups and make connections to relevant mentors, investors and advisors. We invest in two stages of the value creation cycle: 1. The first is our earliest stage funding mechanism in which we invest in a handful of young startups a year who participate in our summer accelerator program. The Summer Accelerator is an immersive twelve-week program in which the SSC provides a $10k investment, mentorship, and educational programming in exchange for 2% equity. 2. The second model is a more traditional seed and pre-seed investment of $50-100k. In order to be a candidate for either mechanism of funding, one or more of a company's founders need to be BC alumni, students, staff, or faculty.

Super excited for the Candor team on their recent relaunch as the go-to culture platform for modern teams! Candor makes it easy for people (especially remote-first teams!) to work together better - you can show appreciation via shout outs, centralize feedback (in a beautiful interface!), and easily prep for 1:1 meetings. If you work on or manage a team that's highly focused on collaborating intelligently with each other (think: having individual user manuals for how you each like to work / engage), Candor is worth checking out. Way cooler and more functional than a bunch of Google docs and WAY more accessible (and wallet-friendly!) than trying to build your own bespoke system in-house. As someone who has been simultaneously praised and criticized for the exact same leadership behavior in a past performance review (hard to be a subject matter expert without having an assertive opinion on best practices / strategy! 🙃), I wish I'd had a tool like Candor to help people better understand me and my values / preferred ways of working in the past. So proud of what Kelsey Bishop and her team continue to build together so that more people can feel appreciated, aligned, and seen for who they are at work! One of the most important parts of SSC is our mentor network. Since 2014, we've built an engaged community, comprised of BC alumni and friends from the broader Boston ecosystem and beyond, that generously offers time and perspective to SSC founders in our accelerator and broader portfolio. Becoming an SS C mentor is easier (and in many cases, less of a time commitment) than you'd think! Typically, mentoring looks like one of three options: 1️⃣ Direct 1:1 Connections: In this format, mentors are paired up with a founder or team to connect directly to offer perspective and advice. We ask folks to dedicate a minimum of 60 minutes to any company they're matched with, but any additional time after that is only based on the mentor and company's mutual interest in continuing the conversation. Matches are based on our understanding of the mentor and company's mutual interests and needs. 2️⃣ Workshop Mentoring: Many members of our community have deep subject matter expertise on host of valuable topics, from hiring to application development to sales. We invite mentors who enjoy teaching or who want to dive deep into one topic or domain to impact several companies at once by hosting an interactive workshop (30-60 minutes) with our summer cohorts. 3️⃣ Fireside Chats: We believe one of the best ways to feel inspired and motivated is by hearing the stories of others who have achieved success and persevered through challenges. We're fortunate that there are some extremely talented founders + CEOs in the SSC network who are willing to share the unabridged versions of their founding story, from idea to (in several cases!) acquisition / IPO. 🦅💰 Since 2017, SSC Venture Partners has invested just over $1.08M into 27 companies that have gone through our summer accelerator. (Note: we've put more money to work for BC-bred companies than that in total, but in this post, we're focused on accelerator alums only!) 🌱 We're proud that 70% of that capital has been invested in rounds that companies have raised after completing the accelerator - a little more than 1/3 of our accelerator companies grow to become a part of SSC's broader portfolio. 📈 Since SSC doesn't lead, each of our checks is part of a larger round of capital raised by these companies - in a future post, I'll do the math and share how much additional capital has been raised by SSC accelerator companies as a whole! 🎓 Our mission has always been to give more BC students and graduates the chance to explore entrepreneurship as their first career path. The majority (60%) of the founding teams we've backed post-accelerator launched their companies immediately after graduating BC (or started while they were undergrads). Several of them turned down job offers to build their business full-time after completing the summer accelerator!
