🌿 Tickets on sale now! 🌿 On Friday, November 22nd at 7pm, Sojourner House will host its 14th Annual Masquerade Ball inside the grand ballroom at the Graduate Providence hotel. This year, guests are invited to dance through the Enchanted Forest, a place where seeds of hope are planted and beauty blooms out of darkness. For one magical night, this fairytale realm will open to those who stand against violence and sparkle with music, laughter, and whimsical entertainment. Here, amid moss covered tablescapes and twinkling lights, fairies (and their friends) will sip shimmering cocktails, enjoy delectable hor d'oeuvres, find treasures at the silent auction, and revel in performances from Toys 2 Men, DJ Dayglow, Extraordinary Rendition Band (ERB), and more. During the ball, Sojourner House will sponsor a woodland-themed dessert contest and challenge the city’s best bakeries to create the top voted confectionery masterpiece. And of course, once our “celebrity” judges cast their votes, guests will be invited to sample and savor the entries! The event is Sojourner House's largest fundraiser of the year, so call up your friends and join us for a night of magic! Tickets: https://lnkd.in/dzJDDJxr 💜 We're offering an early bird discount from now through September 2nd! Yesterday afternoon, Mayor Brett Smiley and the United Way of Rhode Island held a press conference to announce that they would be awarding $1.5M in Providence Equity Grants to 15 local nonprofits; including Sojourner House! This funding comes from the Providence Municipal Reparations Commission, whose main focuses are closing the racial wealth gap, addressing the negative impacts of urban renewal, and advancing culturally congruent education in Providence classrooms. Through this initiative, Sojourner House is receiving a $50,000 grant to support and expand our affordable housing development initiative. We began our foray into housing development in 2021 with the understanding that lack of access to safe and affordable housing is one of the primary reasons why victims in our state stay with abusive partners. Believing firmly that housing should never be a barrier to safety, we’ve been working hard to fill this critical need in our community and provide more affordable housing options to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Since we started this work, we’ve purchased and rehabilitated five new properties (in addition to two we already owned) which we now rent (or will rent when rehab is complete) to survivors of abuse and their children. Thank you Mayor Brett Smiley and United Way of Rhode Island for investing in this important work! There are many reasons to be in awe of Simone Biles. She’s a fierce athlete– considered by many to be the greatest all-time professional gymnast. She’s a champion of mental health and frequently speaks about the positive impact therapy has had on her life. She’s also a vocal advocate for survivors of abuse, and for that we’re eternally grateful. In January 2018, Simone shared a statement online revealing that she was one of more than 130 women sexually abused by former Team USA gymnastics physician, Larry Nassar. She went on to talk about the impact this trauma has had on her life (and the lives of many others), and the anger she feels at the individuals and systems that allowed this abuse to go unchecked for so long. In 2020, following Nassar’s conviction and calls for greater protections for athletes, Simone dedicated her performance at the Tokyo Olympics to sexual assault survivors. She told Hoda Kotb on the Today Show, “I feel like if there weren’t a remaining survivor in the sport, they would’ve just brushed it to the side.” In the years since, she’s continued to speak publicly about the abuse she experienced, even though it’s understandably difficult for her to do so. Her reasoning? "It could help a lot of people.” Simone knows first hand what can happen when survivors share their stories. She says it wasn't until gymnast Maggie Nichols bravely spoke about being abused by Nassar that she found the words to describe her own experiences. Maggie's words empowered Simone, and helped her shed some of the guilt she’d wrongfully placed on herself, and she’s hoping to use her platform to do the same for others. The impact of Simone’s openness and strength is immeasurable. Even without the medal (and there are many), she’s the GOAT in our minds.💜 #SimoneBiles #TeamUSA #Olympics #SexualAbuse #SexualAssault #RhodeIsland

We want to say a big THANK YOU to our friends at HarborOne Bank for their generosity and kindness! The bank recently awarded Sojourner House a $10,000 grant to aid us in providing safe housing and supportive services to survivors of abuse in the Rhode Island community. Two lovely people from their Providence office, Chance and Jamie, even came in person to drop off the check and were both so eager to support our work (and our clients) in any way they could. Thank you HarborOne Bank for investing in our work and recognizing the importance of trauma-informed victim services.

We’re thrilled to share that Sojourner House's Drop-In Center has been selected as a Lowe's Companies, Inc. renovation project! With this #LowesHometowns grant we're going to be able to demolish and rebuild the Center’s front steps to increase accessibility, replace six dormer windows that have been requiring considerable maintenance, and renovate the building's lower level so that it can be used as a gathering space for housing clinics, support groups, youth programming, and more! Our team has dreamed of making these renovations since we purchased the building in 2022, and are so grateful for Lowe's Companies, Inc. for making them possible!

On Friday night, Sojourner House's Spring Campaign came to a close, and thanks to the commitment and kindness of this community, we met our fundraising goal. We can hardly believe it! Through this campaign we were able to raise $300,000 to support life-saving services for victims of abuse! It meant so much to our team to see so many different individuals invest in the future of our organization; and to see them speak publicly about why they think victim services are important and need to be protected. We do this work to support our community (by providing victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking with compassion and vital aid during times of crisis), but we also couldn't do it without our community. So from all of us here at Sojo, thank you for helping us create a safer and more loving community where everyone can thrive.
