SONiC (Software for Open Networking in the Cloud) is an open source network operating system based on Linux that runs on switches from multiple vendors and ASICs. SONiC offers a full-suite of network functionality, like BGP and RDMA, that has been production-hardened in the data centers of some of the largest cloud-service providers. It offers teams the flexibility to create the network solutions they need while leveraging the collective strength of a large ecosystem and community.

    Alibaba Cloud at ACM SIGCOMM'24 Last week, we presented 6 papers (62 papers accepted in total) in Sydney at ACM SIGCOMM https://lnkd.in/gpbjStnJ One of our paper got Honorable Mentions, only one step away from best paper. Very proud of the team! Being with these young and smart people, I also feel very energized. The AI network is the hottest topic at this conference (without a doubt). How to build large-scale training clusters at the 10K-100K GPU level is a current focus of the industry. High performance network with high stability is the core demand for training clusters. Alibaba Cloud started deploying RDMA high-performance networks since 2016, initially for high-performance storage scenarios, and later for AI training scenarios. Based on years of large-scale deployment experience, we published the new network architecture solution for AI clusters at this year’s sigcomm (Alibaba HPN: A Data Center Network for Large Language Model Training).  The core philosophy of the Alibaba HPN architecture design is to build a network with large bandwidth and a simple physical topology at an optimized cost, and then implement efficient multi-path solutions and congestion control on top of that. The HPN network uses 400G NICs, 51.2T single-chip, SONIC-based white-box switches, and a multi-track physical network topology. To avoid the higher failure rate associated with optical modules (compared with DAC), we adopted a NIC dual uplink solution to avoid the NIC-TOR link flapping issue. On this basis, we also implemented a dual-plane design, which doubles the radius and allows a 2-layer single-chip switch CLOS architecture to support the scale of 15K H800 GPUs, achieving optimal cost, simplified topology, and high reliability. Due to the extremely simplified network topology, we can use a simple multi-path algorithm to fully distribute the traffic evenly, effectively avoiding network congestion. On top of this, we have added our self-developed HPCC congestion control and persistent hashing schemes on switch to handle network failure scenarios effectively. In our design, we didn’t use deep buffer switches, and we didn’t use some popular features such as PFC, packet spray, etc. Simplicity does make a lot of difference for the network stability, especially for the large-scale AI cluster!
