We are excited to announce that Azurite Professional Community, Inc. has been listed among the Albuquerque Journal’s Top Workplaces for 2024! As a newly formed company, we’re humbled at the feedback our employees put forth that made this recognition a reality. “This award is a testament to the incredible team we have that made it possible to launch Azurite,” adds Azurite CEO, Sonja Jamilla. “This recognition is especially meaningful as it reflects the dedication and positive feedback from the employees at all of our companies. Their efforts to both launch Azurite in this past year, and to support the three pillar companies that make up Azurite, have paid off and the results have been outright extraordinary.” #StrongerCommunitiesbyDesign

Azurite Professional Community is pleased to announce the appointment of Sonja Jamilla as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective May 1st. Jamilla succeeds Karl Tonander, P.G., P.E., who served as CEO/COO for the past five years and will transition to focus solely on his role as Chief Operations Officer (COO). “Souder, Miller & Associates, and now Azurite, have experienced a remarkable period of growth over the past five years thanks to the efforts of the leadership teams and all the employees,” said Tonander. “In many ways we accomplished more in the past five years than in the previous twenty, smashing performance records and expanding employee benefits, and that does not happen due to any one person. I have complete faith in the abilities of Sonja, the leadership team, and our invaluable employee-owners to continue our renaissance and development as a regional leader in professional services.” At SMA, Jamilla held the Marketing Manager position and played a key role in the development of SMA’s Asset Management and GIS Services and in 2019, she assumed the role of Chief Information Officer. “I'm honored to lead Azurite Professional Community as CEO and it’s exciting to think about what the future holds for us,” remarked Jamilla on the succession. “With guidance from our seasoned managers and leaders, we’ll continue to provide the support and resources to help our talented teams deliver impactful solutions to our clients and communities. I extend my sincere gratitude to Karl for his invaluable contributions. Building on the strong foundation laid by Karl, I'm committed to maintaining this momentum through strategic initiatives that fuel our success.” We are extremely excited for what Jamilla’s appointment brings to both Azurite and its pillar companies. Our mission to enhance community health and safety through environmental compliance, collaborative planning, and expert engineering design services continues stronger than ever. #StongerCommunitiesByDesign

Earlier this month, two SMA employees, Karl Tonander, P.G., P.E., CEO, and Marty Howell, PE, CSA, served as judges for NMSU’s WERC Environmental Design Contest! The contest invites undergraduate engineering students from across the United States and abroad to tackle a sample Request for Proposal and follow the methodology required to respond to it. The consortium was a joint effort between the Department of Energy, Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico State University, The University of New Mexico, and Dine' College (formerly Navajo Community College). Karl and Marty served as judges for Task 1: Stormwater Management for Community Resilience. Additionally, SMA served as one of the “Iron” tier sponsors. Special thanks to all of the participating universities, Michigan Technological University, Louisiana State University, Washington State University, University of Mississippi, California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), Northern Arizona University, and of course New Mexico State University!
