Susan Dyke, a retired Tobey Hospital charge nurse, had almost fully recovered from a head-on crash in 2020 that left her with a broken sternum, a shattered ankle and at least 10 broken ribs. That is, until about two years ago when she noticed a dime-sized red spot on the ankle that had been injured and operated on. It didn’t hurt, but it didn’t go away and soon after, it began to bring on other skin issues. Despite seeing dermatologists and allergists, no one could figure out what was happening. That’s when Susan was urged to visit our Makepeace Wound Care Center at Tobey Hospital. She walked into the office of Dr. Pilar Alonso, Medical Director of Wound Care for Southcoast Health, in November 2023. “I want to help you,” Dr. Alonso said. That’s when everything changed for Susan. This is her story: https://lnkd.in/esfADRPT

Chris Saunders, a New Bedford native, enjoyed snowboarding and running until persistent lower back and shooting leg pain from a slipped disk stole his joy. He made trips to the chiropractor for years, only to get temporary relief. “Every once in a while, my neck, back and legs would tighten up, and I’d go to the chiropractor for treatment. Eventually, those treatments just stopped working,” he says. In January 2022, after injuring himself shoveling snow, he sought answers from neurosurgeon Dr. Matthew Philips, Chief of Brain & Spine Services for Southcoast Health. Today, Chris has returned to running and doing the things he loves. “I’m glad I had it done,” he says. “There was no need to go to Boston for the surgeries. I’ve got expert care right here. Dr. Philips and his team did a wonderful job. I loved him.” To learn more about his story visit https://lnkd.in/eDM4zqyW.

Kara Caron was approaching age 50 when she began to assess the gynecological care she needed as she neared menopause. An athletic mother of three, she could tell her body was changing. When hot flashes started interrupting her sleep, Kara sought help from her primary care physician. She tried the black cohosh and other natural remedies her doctor recommended, but after about six months Kara decided she needed a more effective treatment. “I wanted to breeze through my menopausal age as gracefully as possible,” she said. “And I wanted an expert in that area.” That’s when her research led her to Dr. Barbara Soares, a gynecologist and obstetrician who helps lead Southcoast Health’s new Menopause & Wellness Program. This is Kara’s story: https://lnkd.in/e-b2xezB
