Converting this 19th Century barn to an free-standing extension of our client's home meant stabilizing and reinforcing the building's historic (and rustic) timber structure, weatherizing the house, and then juxtaposing new modern finishes with the existing posts & beams, creating compatibility through contrast. #restoration #renovation #addition #architecture and #interiors

Full-service and award-winning Architecture firm that provides a comprehensive range of design services.
About us
SPG Architects is a mid-sized architectural firm based in New York City. SPG Architects is a full-service award-winning architecture firm founded by Coty Sidnam and currently led by Eric Gartner. SPG provides a comprehensive range of design services and has served clients on a range of architecture and design services. The firm has served our clients on a wide variety of regional, national, and international projects that include single- and multi-family residences, retail environments, corporate interiors, and institutional and hospitality buildings and spaces. Corporate clients have included a wide range of fashion and design companies, as well as traditional and new media companies. Residences include numerous co-op and condominium apartments, urban townhouses, second homes, free-standing houses, and residential compounds throughout the United States and Latin America. Although the clients are diverse, they are united in their desire for architecture that is well conceived and well executed by a team of thoughtful and energetic design professionals. SPG Architects’ modernist approach to design allows for the various functions of a space to be organized and expressed, while eliminating the cacophony of the untended environment. Architectural ideas are drawn from the project site and the client’s needs and desires. These then are expressed through manipulations of form and light. An interest in up-to-date building technologies, natural and man-made construction materials, and a constantly developing approach to sustainable design strategies further inform our designs. SPG’s work clearly presents a visual consistency based on human proportions,

This Manhattan apartment is designed to maximize transparency and bring light from its west-facing perimeter into the reconfigured living spaces. Each room along the western edge of the apartment is visually unified with glass panels terminating the perpendicular walls, and the apartment's connection to the expansive views of Riverside Park and the Hudson River is accentuated. What's more revitalizing than fresh air, natural sunlight and views of nature, especially when combined with the cleansing activities of your bath, sink and shower. Here's four recent projects that combine the best of both. #biophilicdesign #residentialdesign #architecture #nature #bath

SPG explores thoughtful sustainable practices for use in each of our clients' projects, with an understanding of how to seamlessly integrate technologies and ecologically sound solutions into our architecture. Clockwise from the top left: Our house in the San Juan Islands, Washington State includes both passive solar and solar panels solutions. Our off-the-grid house in Costa Rica includes a full room dedicated to battery storage of renewable energy. The Asheville, NC residence includes a green roof over the separately zoned guest quarters.

Our projects usually emphasize the expansive nature of creating a close connection between interior and exterior spaces, and on a practical level, this means expansive areas of glass with movable partitions, creating outdoor spaces that function as true living areas, and creating large openings that literally allow movement from indoors to out.
-
The diverse locations of SPG's projects require that we constantly maintain and update our knowledge about sustainability issues, as local climatic conditions including solar and natural breeze orientations, water availability, and local building traditions all impact both the form and the character of these houses. Here are four of our projects, located in the Costa Rican tropical forest, on a Puget Sound island, in the foothills of North Carolina's Blue Ridge, and in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Wishing all of our friends, followers, clients, colleagues and collaborators a Happy and Peaceful 2024 ! This gingerbread construction was designed and installed in collaboration with and support of the London Museum of Architecture and their NYC Gingerbread City project . True to our aesthetic, the winter wonderland is expressed as a modern and fully edible winter wonderland, with a message of sustainability in a changing world. Happy New Year !
