🎉 Celebrating a Milestone at The Spora Institute! 🌟 We are ecstatic to announce the publication of our landmark research, "Evaluation of a Virtual Health Equity Training for Mid-Career Primary Healthcare Providers," in the prestigious Journal of Medical Education and Curricular Development. This achievement is a testament to our relentless pursuit of advancing healthcare equity and quality. 📘 🔬 Research Overview: Spearheaded by Katherine Roberts, EdD, MPH, MCHES, CPH from Teachers College, Columbia University, this research is a beacon of hope in our journey towards creating a more equitable healthcare system. Our focus was on delivering a comprehensive health equity and implicit bias training to seasoned healthcare providers. 👩⚕️ Training for the Experienced: The study engaged 21 mid-career primary healthcare providers, each with a wealth of experience (over five years) in primary care. Their participation in this training was integral to their role in providing care via a telehealth platform primarily serving a diverse patient population, with a significant representation of patients of color. 📈 Significant Findings: Post-training, we observed an encouraging increase in both knowledge and attitudes towards health equity (p<.001). The engagement level during the training was remarkably high, with only 4.5% of participants being distracted, underscoring the interactive and immersive nature of our training approach. 💭 Interactive Learning: Our training methodology stood out with its emphasis on group-based reflection and discussion. This not only ensured an engaging learning experience but also facilitated a shared understanding and commitment among providers towards implementing equitable healthcare practices. 🌐 Broader Implications: This study is a crucial step in understanding how targeted training can reshape the perspectives and practices of healthcare providers. At Spora Health, we feel it's important to address the narrative outlined by a recent article which we believe does not accurately capture our company's ethos, mission, or the operational challenges we have faced and overcome as a burgeoning startup in the healthcare sector. Our mission is unwavering: to enhance access to quality healthcare for People of Color, an underserved community that often faces significant barriers within the current healthcare system. As a pre-Series A company navigating the complex and unpredictable waters of venture capital, we encountered an unforeseen challenge when a pledged investment did not materialize. This led to a temporary but significant strain on our financial resources, culminating in the necessity for a reduction in force (RIF) to ensure the continuity of our mission. We did not shut down, as the article falsely reports. It was with a heavy heart that we made the difficult decision to part ways with some of our team members. However, we did so with a commitment to rectitude and transparency, ensuring that all affected employees were fully compensated by 2023. This action, while challenging, has not deterred us from our path; it has galvanized us to push forward with even greater determination. Despite the setbacks, Spora Health has persevered, achieving exponential growth, expanding our geographic reach, and securing new contracts that have enabled us to significantly increase our impact on the health and well-being of the communities we serve. We've been fortunate to welcome back some of the talented individuals who were part of the RIF, and we continue to maintain a culture that fosters dedication, innovation, and minimal turnover. As we move forward, our commitment extends beyond our immediate team to the wider community that we serve. According to the CDC, Black women have the highest maternal mortality rate in the United States, with white women three times less likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause. One of the big reasons? Because doctors don’t take their concerns and complaints seriously. Spora Health, an inclusive, virtual-first primary care provider that caters to #BIPOC folk, knew something needed fixing. To help their patients, they developed a health monitoring system for pregnant Black individuals. The entire approach involves online education, a welcoming community, one-on-one support, and a kit to monitor and track their vitals, all from the comfort of their own home.
