Thank you to Women in Sports Tech, Inc. for building a community of individuals committed to creating lasting change in the sports tech world. Although this part of its story comes to a close, its influence in changing the ratio will continue to ripple through the industry, impacting companies like Sports Reference for decades to come. Since we partnered with WiST in 2021, we have: - Hosted 3 WiST Fellows on our engineering and product teams - Hired 2 former WiST Fellows as interns on our data and marketing teams - Hired 1 former WiST Fellow as a full-time employee All we've accomplished in the past few years has been supported by the connections made by and skills fostered by WiST. As a result of our partnership with WiST, some other benefits have been: - Higher employee engagement, as some of our full-time employees have found fulfillment as mentors to WiST Fellows - Improved quality of candidates in our talent pool, by posting our open roles on the WiST NETWORK job board And most importantly, a company culture where people know we're committed to making the sports tech industry a more equitable and inclusive place. Formally introduced in 2019 by Mitch Goldich, the octopus is a stat where someone scores a touchdown and the following two-point conversion on the same drive. We worked with Mitch to get this on the site and ensure that each octopus was accounted for. 🐙 Recently, Mitch spoke with Mike Lynch, our Executive Director of Data, during his Octopus of the Year article on Sports Illustrated. They discussed how the stat got on Pro Football Reference, and how these fun statistics add another level of enjoyment to the game. Check out the story here: https://lnkd.in/gd-kz5Gw

We're honored to sponsor SABR and have our team members at the SABR National Convention last week in Minneapolis! From the Welcome Reception presented by Baseball Reference, to the Immaculate Feud game inspired by Immaculate Grid, it's a pleasure to be a part of the convention and its events. We'll see you next year at SABR 53! ⚾️

    Product at Sports Reference

I had a wonderful few days at the SABR National Convention in Minneapolis. A highlight of the convention (and honestly, my career) was meeting Don Daglow, who designed Earl Weaver Baseball with Eddie Dombrower. I brought my copy of Earl Weaver Baseball for Don to sign—yes, the same copy (on 5.25” floppies for our Apple IIGS) I lost myself in for hours on end as a kid. We talked about how the game (which was really more of a simulation engine to me) sparked my interest in baseball history and building things. I can directly draw a line from EWB to the dream job I have today. Amazingly, one afternoon I got to just sit down with Don and talk about his career and the things he made that had such a profound impact on my career and the things I help build today. He also appreciated hearing that while my dad may not have been remotely interested in sports, he got us our first computer for Christmas 1986 and purchased EWB for me shortly after—his own unique way of setting me on this path. They say “don’t meet your heroes” because you could be disappointed. But sometimes you meet the most talented, humble, and empathetic people who are truly energized by hearing about their impact on you. My heart is full because the SABR convention is full of people who never really “grew up” and stopped reading the backs of baseball cards and playing baseball simulators. I got to see so many people I consider dear, dear friends, from podcasters to former general managers and everyone in between. Seriously, imagine ripping open old card packs with something like 75 other people and sitting next to someone telling you stories about signing the player on the card you’re holding. There is nothing like it. The Twins were incredible hosts. Speakers included FOUR Hall of Famers (Rod Carew, Tony Oliva, Bert Blyleven, and Jim Kaat), LaTroy Hawkins (who was phenomenal), Glen Perkins, and many members of the front office. The ballpark is gorgeous and locals are lucky that’s their home park. SABR 53 in Dallas-Fort Worth has already been announced and I can’t wait to see everyone again.
