  • Dr. Lathan made a SPLASH at Good Morning, Springfield! Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce 🌊 Last school year, we improved attendance districtwide by 2 percent. This collective effort from all of our staff, parents, caretakers and community helped us achieve an increase in attendance -- opening doors for students to learn and thrive by being in school. At State of the Schools last year, Dr. Lathan made a promise to dump Gatorade on her head if we reached our goal. Today at her State of the Schools, she kept her word and made a big splash. #SPSproud #goodmorningsgf

  • Our community partners make it possible. On Saturday, more than 6,500 (!) students, parents, siblings, uncles, grandmas, caretakers, community members and neighbors kicked off the school year at the SPS Back to School Bash. More than 170 volunteers helped pass out resources, served lunch, coordinated art projects, demonstrated robots and answered questions. Together, we distributed: 🔵 4,500+ backpacks with basic school supplies 🔵 3,000 hygiene kits from Care to Learn 🔵 4,700+ bags of groceries from Convoy of Hope 🔵 4,000+ cheeseburgers and apple slices 🔵 250 haircut vouchers from Supercuts With the help of more than 50 community partners, we were able to distribute more than $100,000 of resources to SPS families. School starts Aug. 19, and we're so excited to welcome you #BacktoSPS

"Our volunteers, our team, even their children have helped make this possible, and it's amazing what we can accomplish when we come together as a community for the families we serve." • High school seniors, cleared for take off 🛫 Glendale High School senior Thomas Brown's learning is taking off with Fly SPS, an innovative choice program and partnership with Ozarks Technical Community College and Premier Flight Center. By the time he graduates, he'll earn his private pilot license -- at no cost to his family. "Flying is the most fun thing I've probably ever done," he said, packing his flight backpack. "I'll be a senior this year, but soon, I'll be a pilot." This summer, six Fly SPS students are learning in the sky in pursuit of their private pilot license. Flight hours, or instruction while operating an airplane, are essential to becoming a pilot. In addition to time in the air, students are engaged in aviation classroom work and simulator use at Premier Flight Center, located at Springfield-Branson National Airport. "Fly SPS helps students gain skills to pursue a career in aviation, whether on the ground or in the air," said Dr. Katie Kensinger, director of college and career readiness. "But students don't just become pilots, they become more confident, dynamic leaders who have a goal and meet it every time they take off and land. It's amazing to see in 18 months how much students have achieved, and they're just getting started." #spschoice
