We are excited to have been part of a study testing a new care method called Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC) for babies born with difficulties from opioid exposure. The NIH funded this study in which our Women’s and Children’s Services team compared ESC to the traditional Finnegan scoring system. Here’s what we found with the ESC method: • It reduced overall opioid exposure. • The babies had shorter opioid treatment times. • The babies spent less time in the hospital compared to traditional methods. The ESC method also helps families be more involved in caring for their babies. It focuses on making sure babies can eat, sleep and feel comforted, instead of just using medicine to treat withdrawal symptoms. Ellee Adams, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services, says, “This approach effectively managed withdrawal symptoms while engaging the family.” A team of staff nurses, nurse educators, nurse managers, neonatologists and nurse practitioners worked together on this study. “Less medication, less time in the hospital and more family engagement offer long-term benefits for infants recovering from neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS),” Adams said. The trial shows a promising alternative to conventional treatment methods, leading to better health and improved well-being for newborns recovering from opioid exposure. A huge thank you goes out to our dedicated team and everyone involved in this impactful study!
