"Knowing and understanding the different generations is important when leading people and enabling them to bring their best self to work." September is Intergenerational Month. Roger, a manager in administrative services, emphasizes the importance of recognizing the value various generations have on the workforce. "I grew up in Bloomington, Illinois, and my father was a 35-year employee for State Farm. Because of him, I was aware of the company and culture. The work he did inspired me to pursue a career with the organization and get involved with our employee resource groups (ERG)." As co-lead for the My Generation ERG, Roger uses his experiences and creativity to support programs and initiatives designed to educate employees on generational topics. "Intergenerational Month presents another opportunity to encourage associates to meet and learn about other people’s experiences and grow their network. State Farm Agent Matt Guillory credits his passion for hospitality to his upbringing in New Orleans. Throughout high school, Matt worked in various restaurants, and later obtained a degree in Hospitality Management from the University of Southern Mississippi. For 13 years, he worked for a food service company, assisting restaurant owners in growing their businesses. "My previous role fueled my entrepreneurial spirit, and I found satisfaction in the success of others. A conversation with my good friend, who happened to be a State Farm agent, made me realize the similarities between our careers: helping people achieve their goals and protecting what is important to them." This realization, along with the freedom of business ownership, led Matt to pursue the State Farm independent contractor agent opportunity. "In the early years of operating my agent office, I learned so much about myself and my team. My office embraces the mentality of learning from failures and the 'we got this' motto. My uncle was a respected former State Farm agent and a pillar in the New Orleans community – I aspired to be just like him when I grew up.
