Serving the islands and you.

About us

Our mission is to operate a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation system for the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket with a commitment to sustainability, accessibility, our port communities, and public engagement. The Steamship Authority is the largest ferry service to the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket from Cape Cod, serving over 3 million passengers each year. We offer the lowest fares and the most frequent daily departures for passengers, automobiles, groups and trucks. Martha’s Vineyard ferries depart from Woods Hole and Nantucket ferries depart from Hyannis. Our seasonal high-speed passenger ferry, the M/V Iyanough, gets you to Nantucket, dock-to-dock, in just an hour. Since 1960, we have been the lifeline to the Islands year-round. Our U.S. Coast Guard-certified crews are committed to the highest level of safety at sea. We are also dedicated to making your trip both comfortable and convenient with spacious seating, snack bars with beverages including beer, wine and mixed drinks and free Wi-Fi and TV on-board. For a perfect day trip, or a longer getaway, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket make wonderful destinations—with magnificent beaches, charming scenery and fabulous shopping and dining. Visitors can take advantage of convenient public transportation to our mainland docks, and bus service as well as taxis, car rentals and bike rentals on the Islands.

The Steamship Authority recently became a member of the Cape & Island Bridges Coalition, a group of local organizations looking to replace the Sagamore and Bourne bridges for community safety and economic viability. As these issues affect our operations and our port communities, we're making sure those interests are represented, and we're proud to be leaders on the waves of change! #visitma #capecod

  • 🥳 Ship-Ship Hooray! 🥳 💫 This SSA crew shout-out for Jim Demers, an able-bodied seaman on the M/V Island Home. 🛍️ "Jim showed us courtesy, patience for our plight, and then ingenuity devising a makeshift wheeled transport to help us offload at the other end of the trip in VH, walking us to a safe curbside and helping unload." 🙏 Thank you, Jim, for your hard work! #YouMakeUsShine

  • Today we got to celebrate Curt Van Riper’s retirement after 40 years at the Steamship Authority! Working as a Management Information Systems consultant, a full-time programmer and analyst, and now as our Director of Information Technologies, Curt has been instrumental to the technological development at the SSA. Thank you, Curt, for your remarkable years of service, and best wishes in retirement! #ssaretirement

  • We're helping the next generation of master mariners set sail on their dreams!  Every year, we welcome students from maritime colleges across the country, including the Cape’s very own Mass Maritime, to get hands-on experience on our ships. This gives them a chance to hone their skills in real settings with our expert crews–and often to come to work with us after graduation. Check out some of this year’s students completing their online training before heading to the boats! #SSACareers

  • The Steamship Authority floats well with others! After the Island Queen ran into some mechanical issues, we helped their on-island passengers continue their travel to Falmouth. A combination of one-way ferry tickets, our complimentary shuttle bus services, and the hard work of our expert crews and staff helped ensure no major interruptions in their passengers’ original travel plans. We're always happy to lend a helping hand to our maritime neighbors—and continue to serve the Islands in any way that we can! #FerryFriends #SSAHelps

Join us as we celebrate Captain Charles Monteiro’s retirement with a “Captain’s Final Watch Ceremony” conducted by none other than his good friend Captain Sean O’Connor. A leader from the parking lots to the captain’s wheelhouse, Charlie’s charisma, drive, and expertise has left a lasting mark at the Steamship Authority. From all of us here at the Steamship Authority, thank you, Captain Monteiro, for all of your hard work. We will miss you and wish you smooth sailing in retirement! You will be missed. #SSACareers

  • 🥳 Our second big anniversary celebration is the 70th for the M/V Governor. ⛴️ Her life began in 1954 in California, and she served Washington State Ferries and the U.S. Coast Guard before joining the SSA in 1998 as a back-up vessel for the Vineyard route. 💫 She's sporting a special logo for her platinum anniversary year and is back on the run starting today! 🤝 Great job!  📸 Photos: https://bit.ly/3QL5fE7 #LogoDesign

  • 🥳 We're celebrating 2 big anniversaries here! ⛴️ It was 50 years ago today we took delivery of the M/V Nantucket. It came online in 1974, just as the SSA was transitioning from the era of steam to the modern age of diesel power. 💫 She's had some work done over the years, but the M/V Nantucket is still essentially the original vessel from that day. 📸 Check out her shiny new logo to celebrate her golden anniversary year! https://bit.ly/3QL5fE7 #LogoDesign

  • Hey, that’s us!

Berard OnTheMove Newsletter - May 2024 The Berard team works with major shipyards throughout the nation to keep their rigorous build schedules on track. The team provided heavy transport solutions to one such shipyard that was commissioned to convert two former offshore supply vessels (OSVs) into ferries. In other shipyard news, in June of 2023, the Berard team offloaded the NOAA Ronald H. Brown for a major shipyard in Mississippi. The ship underwent a major refit, and the Berard team returned to load the Ronald Brown back onto the dry dock. The team used 94 axle lines of SPMTs to move the 273’ vessel from the fabrication area onto the dry dock, where it would undergo further painting and finish work. In community news, Berard has always been a proud supporter of local communities and athletic programs. We were honored to be the 2024 South Lafayette Middle School Baseball League Champions!
