Step Up is sad to learn of the passing of our mentor, Erica Ash. Erica is rightfully remembered for her talent, wit, and gusto. At Step Up, we additionally celebrate Erica as a mentor, donor, and dedicated volunteer. From the moment she began sharing her support with Step Up in 2016, Erica was committed to our mission of inspiring and uplifting young women. She was generous with her time, always agreeing to help in any way she could. She served as a mentor, leader, presenter, or moderator for many Step Up programs, instantly making them more enjoyable, memorable, and impactful with her dazzling presence, authentic curiosity, and care for others. We will remain ever grateful for her significant contributions to Step Up and know that her many mentees will join us in remembering Erica fondly.

Step Up and we’re the same but we’re Brat so we’re not 🍏 At Step Up, we know that Brat is more than just Charli xcx’s album – it’s an anthem for girls everywhere who are taking their power back and redefining what it means to be unapologetically themselves. Everyone’s path to happiness and success is different. It’s time to throw the expectations out the window and be YOU. 💚 #Brat #BratSummer

It’s officially Brat summer 😎   Brat is more than just an album – it’s a redefinition of what it means to be proudly and unapologetically YOU. Check out what Step Up CEO Delores Druilhet Morton has to say about it and join in on the conversation! 🍏

I watched a news commentator’s painful attempt (imagine me pulling out my reading glasses and a printout from a website) at explaining what it means to be BRAT. I agree with Lauren West-Rosenthal's take that Charlie XCX songs, lyrics, and overall vibe take back the traditional, derogatory meanings of “brat” and instead inspire girls to unapologetically be themselves. I'm on board with it. I love the "you do you" aspect of Brat Girl Summer because it focuses on the idea of discovering your own definition of success. Research, such as that from the University of Chicago Consortium on School Research, highlights the importance of granting young people the autonomy to shape their own lives. This autonomy, or agency, plays a crucial role in the journey towards success and fulfillment. In a world where societal pressures often dictate norms and standards, the Brat movement stands out for its emphasis on self-discovery and self-expression. It serves as a reminder that true fulfillment comes from embracing our unique identities and pursuing our own aspirations. So much of what we see impacting teen confidence and self-esteem is trying to reach someone else’s definition of success or definition of what they should be. Being Brat is the opposite of that. Step Up knows that it is about figuring out who you are and expressing yourself. When you know who you are and what your dreams are, then you can begin forging a path that is right for you. #BratGirlSummer #Empowerment #Individuality #SelfExpression #Success #Agency
