Quality internships give students a competitive edge in the job market. Employers value internships that offer clarity, oversight, and skill development. In fact, 70% of those who completed an internship reported having a quality experience. The Business-Higher Education Forum's latest report, Expanding Internships: Harnessing Employer Insights to Boost Opportunity and Enhance Learning, explores the importance of expanding #internship opportunities and offers recommendations to employers in enhancing their internship program.
The Business-Higher Education Forum is excited to announce the release of our latest report, Expanding Internships: Harnessing Employer Insights to Boost Opportunity and Enhance Learning. Internships have become an essential part of the transition from college to career, offering students critical opportunities to explore career paths, develop skills, and increase their chances of securing employment after graduation. However, the demand for these opportunities far exceeds the supply—especially for students from underrepresented backgrounds. Our report dives deep into the reasons behind this gap and provides actionable strategies to help employers expand and enhance their internship programs. The report also offers four key recommendations to ensure that internships are accessible, high-quality, and aligned with the needs of both students and employers. Key Findings: In 2023, 3.6 million students completed internships, but another 4.6 million who sought similar experiences were unable to participate. Quality internships give students a significant labor market advantage, yet many employers face challenges in offering them. Partnerships and resources are crucial for scaling internship programs, particularly for small and medium-sized employers. We invite you to download the full report and join us in creating more opportunities for students to gain valuable work experience. Students are heading back to campus across the country, and with that comes a wave of excitement and energy. To celebrate, we are highlighting three post secondary institutions and organizations working hard to strengthen the link between education and opportunity: 💼 Arizona State University's Work+ is designed to empower student workers to engage more meaningfully with their work. Their affiliated program, the Work+Collective, is a University-led consortium of 17 two- and four-year institutions across the country working to redesign student employment. https://lnkd.in/eqRWpEPy 📜 In partnership with Coursera, The University of Texas System recently launched the microcredential program, Texas Credentials for the Future. By doing so, they’re providing their different universities opportunities to close the gap between the skills employers need and what students learn in a degree program. https://lnkd.in/gGGSi7hf 💻 A program partnership between Seattle nonprofit, Mentors in Tech (MinT), and a local community college, Green River College aims to improve opportunities for students to partner with a mentor in the tech industry and work on classroom projects based on real-world technology problems. https://lnkd.in/gJM4NN-C To all the faculty, administrative staff, parents, and students: we wish you all a wonderful start to the school year! #BackToSchool
