The US Space Agency NASA has recently issued a alert about a massive asteroid speeding towards Earth at an alarming rate. The giant asteroid, 2024 ON, has a diameter of 720 feet (roughly bigger than the size of two cricket pitches) and is expected to pass close to Earth on September 15, 2024. Asteroid 2024 ON was first detected by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Observations Program, which is dedicated to identifying and tracking objects that come within close proximity to our planet. The asteroid has been under close surveillance since its discovery due to its considerable size and speed. It will pass at a distance of about 6,20,000 miles, which is approximately 2.6 times the distance between Earth and the Moon. Malaysian police have rescued more than 400 children from charity homes amid allegations of sexual abuse. As Per Malaysian Police, The operation took place on Wednesday, with he plan raids on 20 locations across two states and resulted in the arrest of 171 adults, including Islamic religious teachers. The rescued children, consisting of 201 boys and 201 girls aged between one and 17, were reportedly subjected to various forms of abuse, including neglect and sexual harassment. This rescue operation followed reports filed earlier this month that raised concerns about the treatment of these children. The homes were operated by Global Ikhwan Services and Business (GISB), which has been linked to a banned religious sect known as Al-Arqam. The federal cabinet has approved the elimination of around 150,000 vacant posts along with amendments to the Pension Act. According to the decision, 60 per cent of vacant federal government positions—estimated at approximately 150,000—will be abolished or labelled as “dying posts.” In a bid to reduce pension liabilities, the cabinet also decided to outsource non-core services, such as cleaning, plumbing, and gardening. This measure is expected to significantly reduce the size of Basic Scale (BS) 1-16 staff in the federal government. US cryptocurrency shares fell in early trading on Wednesday after Democratic candidate Kamala Harris put her Republican rival and crypto supporter Donald Trump on the defensive in a presidential debate. The former president had positioned himself as a pro-bitcoin candidate whose return could mark a win for the industry that has accused the current administration of regulatory overreach. Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, was down 1.6% on Wednesday, while ether fell 2%. Trump had in July courted the crypto industry in a conference in search of donations and votes with a promise of friendlier regulation. “Never sell your bitcoin,” Trump said at the time, adding that if elected the U.S. government will hold bitcoin as a store of value. The Government of Punjab has ended the Rs14 per unit relief for the electricity consumers, the Islamabad Electricity Supply Company (IESCO) said in a statement on Wednesday. The power company iesco said the the consumers will not receive any relief in electricity bills for the month of September. The electricity company also notified that orders have been issued for a change in billing software. The subsidy worth Rs45 billion was announced on August 16 by the Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz for Punjab and the federal capital for the months of August and September. The subsidy was announced for consumers using 201 to 500 units per month. Amna Baloch on Wednesday assume charge as the country’s 33rd Foreign Secretary replacing Syrus Sajjad Qazi who stepped down after attaining superannuation, the Foreign Office said in a statement on Wednesday. Ambassador Syrus was honored with a formal farewell dinner at the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday night. A Grade-22 officer of the Foreign Service of Pakistan, Amna Baloch was appointed as Foreign Secretary last week — the second woman to be appointed on the said post after Tehmina Janjua. During her diplomatic career, the new foreign secretary has held several important tasks both in Islamabad and Pakistan’s missions abroad including as the country’s Consul General to Chengdu, China from 2014 to 2017. She has also served as High Commissioner to Malaysia from 2019 to 2023 and Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg from 2023-2024. Amna Baloch, a mother of two, has also worked as a Minister Counsellor in Colombo, Sri Lanka. She holds a master’s degree in history and joined the Pakistan Foreign Service in 1991. She served as a joint secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office and additional secretary in the foreign minister’s office.
