Houston partner Lexie White is named among a small group of Finalists for The National Law Journal’s Winning Litigators award. In the past 12 months White has first-chaired two different trial teams, leading each to back-to-back victories in jury trials pending in Delaware federal court and Texas state court respectively. She won a $341 million judgment following a jury trial against Samsung over breach of a license agreement and, just three months earlier, secured a unanimous verdict from a Delaware federal jury finding that HTC Corporation willfully infringed two patents declared essential to LTE wireless standards. Winners for the Winning Litigators Award will be announced during an awards event at the Fairmont Washington D.C. – Georgetown on Oct. 24.

On August 19, 2024, Susman Godfrey and co-counsel filed a federal class action copyright infringement lawsuit in the Northern District of California on behalf of a class of authors of an array of works of fiction and nonfiction against Anthropic PBC. Partner Justin Nelson serves as co-lead counsel on the matter. He is joined by partners Rohit D. Nath, Alejandra Salinas, Jordan Connors and associate J. Craig Smyser. Susman Godfrey also serves as co-lead counsel representing numerous non-fiction authors in a class action against OpenAI and Microsoft.

Signaling continued success in their ongoing opioid litigation, Mayor Brandon M. Scott and the City of Baltimore announced they reached a $152.5 million settlement with Cardinal Health to resolve the City’s claims against Cardinal related to its role in fueling the worst opioid epidemic in the nation. Susman Godfrey serves as lead counsel to Mayor Scott and the city in this ongoing litigation. The team is led by partner, Bill Carmody. Joining Carmody are partners Seth Ard, Sy Polky, Michael Kelso, Rocco Magni, Adam Carlis, Cory Buland, Geng Chen, and Krisina Zuñiga; associates Max Straus, Betsy Aronson, Katherine Drews, Jeff Melsheimer; and of counsel Thomas Boardman. The City’s deal with Cardinal is the third settlement it has announced related to its opioid litigation, following a $45 million settlement with Allergan earlier this summer and a $45 million settlement with CVS just last week. The City has now received a total of $242.5 million in settlements. Trial with the remaining defendants is set for September.
