This April, I welcomed a beautiful little girl into the world starting with a planned home birth, an experience that was both empowering and deeply transformative. The decision wasn't easy—especially knowing the harrowing statistics about maternal mortality for women of color, particularly those of us who are over 30, in stressful careers, and plus-size. But I knew I needed to take control of my birthing experience to ensure the best possible outcome for my daughter and myself. Surrounded by a dedicated team—my homebirth midwife, three doulas, an assistant, my husband, my mom, and my son—I embarked on this journey with hope and determination. It was a far cry from the birth of my son 12 years ago, where a cascade of medical interventions led to a C-section, and I felt more like a number on a timeclock than a mother bringing life into the world. This time, the experience was different—beautiful and rooted in the belief that my body was capable of doing what it was designed to do. The planned homebirth was costly, yes, but for us, it was a matter of life or death. We chose life. And in doing so, I realized just how urgent the need is to address the disparities in maternal health care, particularly for women of color. This journey has fueled my passion for maternal health and underscored the importance of the work you all are seeing me lead to ensure that every woman has access to the care and support she deserves. If I hadn’t been able to labor at home with my holistic team, I don’t believe I would have had a successful VBAC. Read more about why planned home births are becoming increasingly popular, especially among women of color, in this insightful article by National Geographic

The tragic death of Harmony Ball-Stribling in rural Mississippi underscores the urgent need to address the social and economic factors that are failing women, especially Black women, in the Southeast. Despite being eight months pregnant, insured, and married, Harmony’s life was cut short due to complications exacerbated by a lack of access to adequate healthcare in her rural community. Her story is a stark reminder that we are failing our mothers if we don’t confront the systemic issues—like poverty, racism, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure—that disproportionately affect women of color. It’s unacceptable that in 2024, women are dying from preventable conditions simply because of where they live and the color of their skin. The Mississippi Delta, like many parts of the Southeast, is a healthcare desert where maternal mortality rates are among the worst in the country. If we don’t start providing access to holistic healers and addressing these social determinants of health, we will continue to see devastating outcomes like Harmony’s. Swishvo is committed to changing this narrative. We are focused on the Southeast and maternal health, ensuring that every woman, regardless of her zip code, has access to the care she needs. This must change now, and Swishvo is here to lead the way. https://lnkd.in/dX8SHA3y

In 2022, over 20,000 infants lost their lives in the United States. This heartbreaking statistic underscores the critical need to address the factors contributing to infant mortality, especially as we witness the first significant rise in these rates in over two decades. At Swishvo, we believe in the power of holistic health solutions to create a safer, healthier future for all families. Today, we’re highlighting the pressing issue of infant mortality and the steps we can take together to turn the tide. Geographically, infant mortality rates in 2022 were highest in the South, Alaska, and the Midwest. These regions often face significant healthcare access challenges, which are compounded by social determinants of health such as poverty, education, and housing instability. We are committed to addressing these challenges by advocating for policies and practices that expand access to holistic health services, particularly in underserved communities. We believe that by empowering healthcare providers with the tools they need, we can help reduce these devastating statistics. Together, we can work towards a future where every infant has the chance to thrive. Every life is precious, and every effort counts. #InfantMortalityAwareness #HealthEquity #Swishvo

It's World Breastfeeding Week, and we're here to chat about all things breastfeeding—because let's face it, feeding a tiny human is a big deal! Whether you're a seasoned pro or a first-time mom, there's always something new to learn about the magic of breastfeeding. So, let's dive in, shall we? The Importance of Lactation Specialists 🦸♀️ Lactation specialists are like the superheroes of the breastfeeding world! They’re the ones who swoop in with life-saving tips and tricks when things get tough. And trust us, getting help from a lactation specialist shouldn't just start after the baby arrives. Nope, it begins before you even hear that first cry. Pre-birth consultations can help you prepare, set realistic expectations, and create a game plan for feeding success. Why is this so crucial? Well, breastfeeding can be as tricky as trying to fold a fitted sheet (you know what we mean)! From latch issues to supply concerns, a lactation specialist can help you navigate the ups and downs, ensuring that both you and your baby are happy and healthy. The Real Talk: Not All Moms Can Breastfeed, and That's OK! 🚫🍼 Here's a little reality check: not all moms can or choose to breastfeed, and that's totally okay! In fact, according to the CDC, only about 25% of infants are exclusively breastfed at six months. This could be due to medical issues, supply problems, or even personal choice. The most important thing is that your baby is fed and loved, no matter how that happens. For those who can't breastfeed, there are amazing alternatives like formula, donor milk, and even specialized support groups. The key is to be kind to yourself and remember that you're doing an incredible job, no matter what. We see you, and we applaud you! Empowering Moms to Breastfeed 🤱 For those moms who do want to breastfeed, EMPOWERMENT is key. It's about providing the right support, resources, and encouragement. Access to lactation specialists, breastfeeding classes, and online resources can make a world of difference. Remember, breastfeeding isn't just a skill—it's a journey. Celebrate the small victories, whether it's your baby latching on for the first time or making it through a night feeding without turning into a zombie. You're doing an amazing job, and every drop counts! Calling All Lactation Specialists! 📢 And hey, lactation specialists, we haven't forgotten about you! If you're passionate about helping moms and looking to start, grow, or manage your practice, we'd love to partner with you at Swishvo. Our platform offers everything you need to streamline your services, from client management to billing. Together, we can make breastfeeding support accessible to more moms, one feed at a time. So, whether you're a mom, soon-to-be mom, or a lactation specialist, let's make this World Breastfeeding Week one for the books! Remember, breastfeeding is about nourishing both body and soul. Happy World Breastfeeding Week! 🎉

As the backbone organization of the New York Coalition for Doula Access (NYCDA), Health Leads led the effort to secure Medicaid coverage for doula care. But this is only the beginning of their work to improve maternal health in New York. Learn more about this initiative below!

With a #doula, birthing people are 22% less likely to experience preterm birth, 53% less likely to deliver via C-section, and 58% less likely to experience postpartum depression and anxiety. 🤰🏽🧘🏾♀️👶🏽 Despite their invaluable contributions, doulas often face significant barriers like negative treatment in clinical settings and low wages, preventing them from providing critical physical and emotional support. 🎯Learn more and support Health Leads’ efforts to increase access to doula services at supportdoulaaccess.com. __ #HealthEquity #MaternalHealth #Healthcare
