We are thrilled to introduce Suzan Bateson, a new, dedicated member of our Board with an abundance of experience as the previous Executive Director of Alameda County Food Bank for over 20 years! Suzan is captivated by children and their ability to imagine, create, and explore. She appreciates that books can do so much for them: they teach, help them try on different solutions and personalities, and support their wildest dreams. She appreciates the children's book, The Suitcase, because it helps readers imagine someone new in the place where they live and the theme of community it highlights. In short, books offer children opportunities to rehearse life and Suzan is excited to support Tandem in our mission to provide access to high-quality children's picture books to the community. With the unprecedented rise of children's book bans, our Support Access to Diverse Books Campaign is officially launched and will run until December 31st. Thanks to a group of generous donors, the first $25,000 in donations to Tandem will be matched dollar-for-dollar! When children see themselves reflected in books, it fosters a sense of belonging that increases children's enjoyment of reading and builds a strong early learning foundation. Within the 25,000 books Tandem gives away and the 40,000 we cycle through classrooms, many highlight diversity across race, gender identity, disability representation, and family structures.
