Longo International Architecture Internship participants Natalie DeLiso, M.Arch ’24, and Michael Thut, M.Arch ’24, share thoughts on their transformative experience with MASS Design Group in Kigali, Rwanda. The partnership with MASS Design Group, a nonprofit firm based in Boston and Kigali, provides students with practical training at the forefront of public-interest architecture. Students are exposed to cultures, landscapes, socio-political considerations, environmental concerns, and other challenges that might differ from what they experience at home. These backgrounds are becoming increasingly critical with the growing international nature of architectural practice. Exhibition THE GIFT until 8.09.2024! Join us on a walk through the exhibition The Gift with curator Damjan Kokalevski and discover stories about the generosity and violence of architectural gift-giving. In Skopje, North Macedonia, we look at humanitarian gifts following the reconstruction of the city after a devastating earthquake. In Kumasi, Ghana, we discover the gift of land. In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, we look at diplomatic gifts, focusing on housing buildings built as gifts from the Soviet Union. In the last story, we look at philanthropic gifts for East Palo Alto, California. Finally, Andjelka Badnjar Gojnić presents local architecture gifts. Lesli Hoey, associate professor and director of doctoral studies in urban and regional planning, writes about the urgent role of urban architecture in a new book. Hoey contributed two chapters to Planning for Equitable Urban Agriculture in the United States (Springer, 2024). “Environmental planners could learn from numerous large-scale UA operations in the Global South that divert waste from landfills, use urban organic waste to improve soil, and preserve farmland greenbelts to conserve water, filter contaminants, and reduce flooding,” Hoey writes. Congratulations to Taubman College faculty member, Irene Hwang, for winning a 2024 Teaching Innovation Prize from the University of Michigan’s Office of the Provost for creating a new approach to mentorship that aims to foster greater equity in architectural education. Hwang’s initiative was one of five U-M projects to receive the $5,000 grants. Hwang, a lecturer in architecture, serves as director of the Equity in Architectural Education Consortium (EAEC), which was founded in 2018 by U-M and partnering universities Florida A&M, Florida International, Hampton, Howard, Morgan State, Tuskegee, and Oklahoma. Taubman's new architecture chair, Antje Steinmuller, talks affordable housing with Ian Volner for Dwell. Joined by colleague and Taubman professor Sharon Haar, the pair discuss how academia is taking on the national crisis. "I also think the question of climate change and how that affects housing is a really pressing one. Being in Michigan means having all these other experts present to tackle these questions through interdisciplinary collaboration—something I'm really hoping to foster, because with housing, there are so many angles that need to be considered."
