Empowering rural communities through innovation and leadership! 🌟 This year, our Rural School Leadership Academy took place in New Mexico, where participants visited the Puye Cliff Dwellings outside of Santa Fe and toured the Kha’p’o Community School in Española. By connecting with peers across the U.S. and experiencing diverse rural schools, our local leaders gain fresh ideas to benefit their communities. This initiative is a game-changer for rural educators! #RuralLeadership #InnovationInEducation #RSLA #TFA

Christhy Whang (Houston ’20) took her passion from the classroom to a whole new level. “I briefly entertained the idea of becoming a college professor,” she shared with us. “But then I thought, ‘Why spend my days debating philosophy when I could be hanging out with kids who get a kick out of fart jokes?’ Plus, nothing beats the joy of getting a big, unprompted hug from a child!” Christhy’s time as an educator shaped her children’s book, “I Made This One For You.” “The themes focus on setting healthy boundaries and respecting others and their belongings—lessons that are just as important in the classroom as they are in everyday life,” she said. Today marks ten years since the tragic death of my dear friend and fellow Teach For America alum, James Foley (Phoenix Corps ‘96). I first met Jim the summer I started TFA, and over the years, I had the opportunity to work alongside and get to know him. His loss gutted the Teach For America community and all who had the chance to know his remarkable and joyful spirit, curiosity, smarts, and fierce pursuit of justice. He lived life with a passion that made everyone around him strive to be better leaders and people. Thank you, Daniel Brock Johnson (Phoenix Corps ‘96), for writing such a personal and beautiful tribute honoring Jim’s legacy. Today, my thoughts are especially with Jim’s incredible mother, Diane M Foley, who continues to remind us of the lasting impact Jim had on all our lives. https://bit.ly/46UIIeA

The #Know2Protect campaign from the US Department of Homeland Security raises awareness and provides resources to address the prevalence of online predators targeting children. Their latest resources are specifically for teachers—often a trusted adult that a student will speak with when something doesn’t seem right—and it was great to see this coverage from Arianna Prothero at Education Week. Equipping educators with these resources is an important step in empowering children to protect themselves online. https://bit.ly/3ArsKg0
