Design this day (in our 27,000 square ft mockup and prototype shop). The shop crew made this fun 6-ft tall sign with one of our favorite tools, the hotwire styrofoam cutter. We proudly participate in a styrofoam recycling program that processes our scraps for reuse.

So much of the artificial intelligence buzz is about the digital applications of the technology. But how AI will affect the built environment? Within five years, Principal Futurist Devin Liddell posits that we'll start seeing changes to physical spaces—airports, in this example—spurned by our increasing use of AI and autonomous tech. Keep reading to learn about the AI-informed airport 5, 10, and 20 years in the future: https://lnkd.in/gFZE8MPN

Three different client projects; three different approaches to prototyping. For example... Sketched mockup = Great for iterating on the spot, workshopping, collecting inputs, speedy design sprints that get us closer to a solution 3D prints = Perfect for testing form and fit, user research and human factors, finessing shape, size, and incorporating technical requirements High-fidelity mockups = Powerful storytelling tools to align stakeholders and showcase final concepts and products And this is just three styles out of dozens of other prototyping methods we might use on any given project! Don't forget about VR/MR/AR, 3D renders, drawings, styrofoam mockups... The fidelity of prototype is entirely dependent on the information we're looking to get, the pace of the project and the stage of development we're in. We learn something different from every type of prototype we create, from rough n' ready to polished.

Why is prototyping important, anyway? “When it comes to product development, prototypes are more than technology demonstrators or proof of concept. They are tools to generate strategic advantage. And sometimes, they are the touchstones that change everything.” – Jesse Peck Prototyping in-house is a critical part of our approach to every design project—we call it “thinking through making.” Read more from our Director of Product Design and Engineering, Jesse Peck, here: https://lnkd.in/gEjqxiQ2

How long does it take to transform an idea into a top-selling product? Not as long as you might think—when you've got the right team. When Segway Powersports decided to break into the Powersports category, they partnered with us to design the industry's first fleet of hybrid electric off-road vehicles. Through a series of design sprints spanning just a few months, we worked hand-in-hand with Segway from product definition to final release. The result? Three unique platforms unified by a common design language that was bold, confident, and undeniably distinct. Fast forward to 2024. While the overall powersports market remained flat early on, Segway PowerSports enjoyed a massive 309% year-on-year wholesale increase and an even bigger 343% retail jump in Q1. Proof that when a clear vision drives iterative design, you're not just speeding up the development process—you're outpacing the competition.

We get philosophical about robots. This shows up especially in science fiction films, with benevolent and malevolent examples respectively thrilling and terrifying our imagined lives with robots. Within these musings mostly about us, though, we can lose sight of why we want robots in the first place: We want them to do work. Our cozy rail seating concept, the Flex Voyager, was chosen to be featured in the new issue of Railway Interiors Magazine! Inspired by the comfort and versatility of a couch, this concept features modular seating configurations that cater to various passenger needs: - With the middle bench seat flipped up, two passengers can sit face to face. With the middle seat down, couples or small families are able to lounge together in a more relaxed position—just like at home. - Solo travelers can purchase the entire bench to stretch out for a nap, utilizing the unobtrusive screen in the warm wood-grain console to display a “relax mode” message for crew. - The narrow screen also shares geographic and journey-specific information, and can be synced with the traveler’s AI assistant to provide personalized journey guidance. - Securable stowage beneath the bench provides easy access to luggage and personal items. An additional flip-up cubby in the console can hold smaller items, helping to keep the passenger’s space organized and clutter-free.

A big shout out to my panelists for a great conversation at this week's Ascend Conference in Las Vegas. We tackled the future of human and robot collaboration in space exploration, defining the essential elements in creating a thriving human to robot relationship. It was the perfect blend of internal experience and external perspectives from a very talented panel. Thank you Tim Hulford, Carla Diana, and Kerry Timmons.
