Spent last week in Tyonek with Kev and Cedrych. Man, what a beautiful community and fantastic people. Energy retrofit on the Community building and Corporation office went off without a hitch. Corporation Building: All new direct wire ballast bypass LED 4’ lamps to replace the 4 lamp T-8 fluorescents . We were able to cut the amount of lamps in half in the building and achieve that same amount of lumens/ft with the new LED’s plus remove all of the 17 watt ballasts (about 60 of them) for additional savings. We also replaced all incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps with lA19 LED bulbs nearly 50 bulbs altogether. Installed programmable digital appliance timers for their larger appliances like commercial coffee makers (for safety and energy savings) and converted 2 wire mercury thermostats to 3 wire 5/2 day programmable smart thermostats. Community Building: Replace 12 sets of 12’ fluorescent 3500k fixtures in the rotunda (8’ and 4’ strips connected together) with 24 new LED 5000k strip fixtures. We also replaced all remaining T8 fluorescent fixtures in the building with 2-lamp LED retrofit surface mounted fixtures.we replaced the upper rotunda compact fluorescent lamps with LED’s as well. We added programmable digital timers and 5/2 programmable thermostats as well. One of the primary issues was a 10’ resistive 240V 15A electric heater in one of the conference rooms that had been hard wired to run continuously. They controlled it by turning on and off the breaker with no temperature control. We added a line voltage programmable thermostat to control the heating in that area. We did a few other energy related items like clearing out the return air ducts and installing and replacing furnace filters as well The weather was beautiful the entire time we were there and provided a bit of training to the community for each building. We also got to learn a bit about the rich history of Tyonek and how the tribe and corporation work together to manage all of their systems and infrastructure. We look forward to working with all of the groups that were part of this project in the future. Big thanks to Dana at NREL/CCHRC, and the community, tribe and corporation in Tyonek.
