The best decision I made 12 years ago was to move to Chicago. Here's why. I don’t believe in destiny. Nothing is fixed. Everything can be created. As long as you stay in the driver seat. In 2012 I was at a crossroads after finishing my masters and working in our family business. 𝐈 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: 📥 Moving ‘pertinently’ in the family business. 📤 Moving ‘pertinently’ out of the family business. As with so many people I had difficulties making the ‘right’ decision. So I moved to Chicago for a few months. To move away from everyday life. To think about my next step. To make my key decision. That sounds like the nice story I was telling everyone. Whereas in fact, I just escaped from making a decision. That Chicago trip changed my life after an internship at Technori. I knew for sure that my next adventure should include 2 things: 1️⃣ International focus & colleagues. 2️⃣ Tech companies independent of location. I could easily have chosen to continue working in the family business. 𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞: ✔️ Great salary & position. ✔️ Secure and stable future. ✔️ Sufficient career trajectory. ✔️ Healthy profitable business. 𝐈 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞: 🚫 Low salary & just the first commercial guy. 🚫 Insecure future for our startup business. 🚫 No career path; we were with only 4. 🚫 Zero profitability but big ambitions. 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝟭𝟮 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐚𝐒: 💸 Unreal steep paycheck development. 🆙 Very stable career trajectory within Saas. 👨🏼🏫 Leading & developing multiple GTM teams. 📈 Amazing steep learning curve the last decade. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞: 🌎 Always worked in international environment. 🏝️ Always worked in jobs independent of location.
